Mixed bag in the Ice Today

Son and I got a mid day start. It was a pretty awesome day. It was a mixed bag, we end up with a couple trout, some jumbo perch, sauger, walleye, and a big fat carp.

In the end we brought home 4 sauger, 4 perch, 8 walleye… Not much better than fresh fish fry!!!

He was a handful for sure. Definitely had some shoulders on him and hard to turn up the hole.

I have never caught a carp through the ice. This was was on a little clam perch jig set up. Tiny little jig and 4 pound test. It was fun.

I've done my fair share of hard water fishing. Colorado, wyoming, north dakota, Wisconsin, UP, minnesota. Never have I ever seen a carp on ice.

Cool! Looks like a great day. Had no idea a carp would bite under the ice!

Went back out today. It was way windy and a lot slower. Still landed 5 walleye 3 big fat perch and a couple bows.

My personal best walleye just over 24” and fat. She was put back.

Mid day in the wind was rough but gave the boy a good nap.

I have a spot on the rock river here in WI where we fish them specifically through the ice. We use gummy bears laying on the bottom on tip ups. So fun catching carp up to 25lb through the ice!

How much longer till Ice out, looks like a lot of fun

Hard to really say. We were on 28" of ice, but each day the temp and wind were making the top melt pretty good. This week we have highs from 48-59. We figure this will have been the last weekend on because the edges are gonna melt. They were still solid this weekend, but with 5 days of mid to upper 50s, I think next weekend it will take some effort to make it onto the ice. I would love one or 2 more weekends, but think our time is really limited...

I have heard of others doing the same thing. But never saw it in practice. We actually fly fish for huge carp in the summer. It is really fun sight fishing. Like a poor man bone fishing in the flats!
