Canadian coal plans have officials on both sides of border nervous
Associated Press
KALISPELL - Plans to resurrect Canadian coal exploration just north of Glacier National Park, and a separate proposal to pursue coal-bed methane development in British Columbia, have some officials on both sides of the border nervous.
The British Columbia government recently advanced plans for coal-bed methane development on several tracts in the Elk River Valley, including one in the headwaters of the North Fork Flathead River.
The coal-bed methane plan has residents and officials in Fernie, British Columbia worried. More than 250 people attended a meeting last week at which the City Council passed a resolution requesting the provincial government delay plans to auction off leases for coal-bed methane on the Crowsnest Coalfield.
The council wants a comprehensive study of the effects of any development on the environment and economy of the area.
