Medical rant

My friends were on one of the Christian/ministry medical co-ops until their daughter had major stomach issues that the co-op decided to not cover part way through. The problem was because they're not "insurance" they're not obligated to cover expenses in the way an insurance company is.

That's a bad thing to find out after a cancer diagnosis or a major accident and suddenly your co-op quits covering their end of the bargain or won't pay for certain medicines, treatments, or procedures.

Luckily they could cover the $15k bill, but things could've turned out differently if it was a $500k bill.

Make sure you know what you're signing up for and who is REQUIRED to pay what.

Their actual price is whatever insurance allows plus what they can sell the debt to a collector for if you don't pay. Obviously they don't want you to know that.

@npaden Should you price it separately with insurance to see the price difference?

It looks like your costs might approach $2k. Being February, the decision is do you want the cost subtracted from your deductible? You’re going to pay the cost either way.

If you have medical issues later in the year, you are $2k ahead on covering the deductible.

Since it is preventative care Medishare doesn't count it toward the deductible anyway. They will apply a PPO discount but that's it. I've never met a deductible on my insurance or on Medishare in 56 years so hopefully I don't have to worry about it this year. I've got money set aside in case I do ever hit it but knock on wood, so far so good.

With all the talk about ROI of education and all the other financial stuff I have always heard that being healthy is a big benefit from a financial perspective. Not only do you save on the medical cost, but you don't miss time off work and all that stuff. Lot's of people focus on financial planning but few focus on what it takes to be healthy. A big part of it is just luck and genetics but focusing on diet and exercise is just as important if not more important than putting money up for retirement. Of course I'm currently not the poster child for this as I let myself get fat and out of shape since CoVid, but I'm working on it.
