My old beagle Dauber, developed a limp Monday morning, and by lunch time he could barely move. I took him to the vet, they checked for everything from bone cancer, to a broken elbow. They drew blood, and fluids. Couldn't seem to find what the problem was. They kept him overnight, in the middle of the night he started vomiting. He refused food and water. They did more test and found that he had some kind of intestinal growth, cancer of the prostrate, and an infection of his pancreas. They put him on antibiotics, and said if we could get him to eat we could bring him home. My wife cooked him some venison hamburger, with rice and he ate. She brought him home and he vomited it all back up this morning. He lay on his rug, and wouldn't move. I called the vet back, they said the only thing they could do was to put him on an IV to replenish fluids, but with his bad heart (he has had it for a couple of years) it was a risk. They said they couldn't do too much more for him. I had to make the decsion to put my BEST FRIEND DOWN. He was a great friend, and a great hunting companion. I will miss ya old friend.

I'm very sorry for you loss.

Very sorry to hear that. At least he lived a long life...almost 14, that's on old dog! Also he was fortunate that he got to hunt. Many hunting dogs live with people who don't hunt...I feel sorry for them! My golden retriver is 12 and I know I'll be faced with the same decision that you were in the next couple of years. It's too bad dogs don't have the same life span that we do.

Don't know which is worse, finding him laying in the middle of the road, like I did on the way home after work, or having to decide to put him to sleep. Either way I know it hurt. "Sliger" was a pain most times, but he was a wonderful companion, and 15 yrs later, I still miss the little hound. Sorry, man.

Whisker's, I am very sorry to hear this. I know how you must feel having had to have my best friend put to sleep in December. Here is a little read I came across called Rainbow Bridge.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks guys. Elkhunter, I hope there is a Rainbow bridge. I will be met by some of the best rabbit dogs, I have ever had the privelege to hunt behind. Ol Dauber, Abby, Jake, Gage, and Homer. It'll be hell for them bunnies in heaven.

Whiskers, I was working out of town, in early January and my wife had to put down a little dog we had for about 10 years. I was working at the time she did it and I had to go outside and cry like a baby for 10 minutes. Those little guys do have a way of worming their way into your heart. I am sorry for your loss, fortunately the pain won't last forever but the fond memories will, Good Luck, JLG.

I'm so terribly sorry, Whiskers. I bought my wife a Beagle pup for Christmas and his is a great lil guy. Sure, he's a PITA, but he's a pup after all. He's a great dog and I'd love to teach him to hunt cotton tails. Do you have any advice for a new Beagle owner? I guess this is a lame time to ask for advice, but I have to ask.

I had an awesome Springer Spaniel that was gun shy, but the best family pet a guy could own. I get all teary eyed every time I think about ol' Sam. I don't wan't to have another hunting dog that's gun shy and would sure appreciate and thoughts or ideas with a pup.

Again, I'm very sorry for your Beagle(family member). It still hurts thinking about Sam. If you would like to email me I'm at [email protected]

Take good care and remember the good times. I always do.

Whiskers,

This past fall I had to put down my 12 + year old lab "Chelan". Tonight I'm feeling your pain.

Sorry about your loss Skip. I had to put a dog away before because of Parvo, nasty stuff! Keep your chin up bud!

That sucks, sorry to hear about your pal. Them dogs are part of a family.
