We’ve found that if you do the right thing for one, it tends to help the other. And private lands and private land managers are important if endangered species are to survive throughout the full range of their habitat.” - Bill McDonald

Well, double-click my mouse and call me Mickey!

Looks like a good goal and a good group!!

This was done without government intervention????

OK I will spell this out...
Lets see, my post said "GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION"-not "GOVERNMENT HELP"!!!
To major differnces in how it was done, I didn't see any thing in the first post about mandates nor new laws. There is no problem with using any of the government sources at our fingertips, we have paid for every thing they have and do, this is a good way to utilize some return from this investment. Should I spell out more of this concept, or you going to try and be nit-picky over what I post, I figured all had enough common sence to figure what I had posted than to try and read way more into it than that and jump to silly conclussions!!!

That was a pleasure to read.
Different side's working together and making progress.
Thats a more balanced middle of the road approch that will go farther then alot of the other group's will .
Putting the effort and money into working goals out ,not just law suite's placed to run rancher's out,or stall environmental effort's.

If you read around a bit on this group, you can see the most impressive thing is not that they did this with out the "government big brother intervention", but rather it was due to the fact these ranchers are damn smart.

quote:
The Malpai Borderlands Group, of which Glenn is a member, has staked a claim to this "radical center." In 1994, with an awareness that ranchers were "losing ground socially and politically," some residents of the Borderlands (an area of about one million acres that stretches across the New Mexico and Arizona border, just north of Mexico) banded together to make something of the common interests shared by ranchers, environmentalists and government agencies--a concern for open country

They were aware the times were changing, and rather than fight a losing battle, they decided to try and succeed in the new environment. But don't think this was done without intervention. There have been some huge grants to this group, to get them to work in this manner.

From the Gordon and Betty Moore foundation The Malpai Borderlands Group (MBG) received a grant of $2,415,000 in September, 2002 to further its grassroots and collaborative work, which blends stewardship, conservation, agriculture, and science. The MBG is part of a community-based effort at work within a 800,000-acre planning area along the Mexican border in southern Arizona and New Mexico.

They were also provided a ranch in New Mexico, to run their cattle on.

Again, my hat is off to the ranchers who saw the "writing on the wall" and decided they would be progressive and succesful in the new set of rules.

Ranching will as a lifestyle and industry will continue to get hammered until more realize this. Just like natural selection, adapt to the current conditions or you go extinct. It's easy to blame someone else instead of YOU changing. This will happen more and more as it is being demanded by the current society. It is those that see it and are willing to adapt are those that will be around for awhile.

Elkgunner and 1 pointer, You've hit the nail on the head! Ranchers need to change their style or they're going to be forced out of business. The smart ones are figuring it out. The rest of them talk about how they deserve to be able to continue their life style---usually at taxpayer expense.

Those are the ones Marvel has to keep beating over the head until they wake up!
biggrin.gif
His style is the only way to get thru to them, otherwise they just resist all change.

People who sympathize with and defend all the whining from the welfare ranchers are just continuing the problem. They need to be beat over the head too!

Otherwise, the welfare ranchers actually will delude themselves into thinking they don't have to change.
