Thought I would try this as a way to share and document my Louisiana public land hunts this season.

1st day of Louisiana public hunting this season has began.

2 day “primitive” weapon hunt. Not very primitive. Breech loading, exposed hammer, 35 caliber and up.

My perch for today and tomorrow:

We will see what happens. Already saw a nice buck this morning but he came up on my right and was within 50 yards so I couldn’t get turned around on him in time. Watched him feed off up the slough.

I have been hunting this spot for about 25 years. I am on my second tree here as the first grew too big for my climber about 5 years ago.

My grandma lived about a quarter mile from here when her and my grandpa married in the 50’s. Her dad ran the sawmill that used to be here. It all became federal land back in the 80’s.

I am almost exactly a half mile from the boat as the crow flies.

Getting settled in for the evening. I climbed down at 1230 to still hunt my way out to the old road where I like to take lunch. I have seen a lot and taken a good bit of game sitting there taking lunch. I got almost to my eating spot when I spotted some hogs feeding. Made a short stalk and shot a 40lb pig. When the bullet passed through apparently it caught one of the pigs siblings. I drug the two pigs out to the road , ate a pouch of freeze driied and slowly made my way back to my stand.

I’ll be going back to the boat with meat tonite regardless but I have high hopes for some deer action before dark.

Found a rub line right where there is almost always a rub line every year.

He was marking it almost to my shoulders but I am only 5’8” lol.

No deer today. Wasn’t able to hunt the evening. Of course I saw 30 deer on the way from the camp to the house from sundown until after dark.

Back to work for a few days then have a 2 day lottery hunt on the refuge this weekend.

Only saw the young 7 point I have been seeing pretty often. Tried to get a good pic of him at 100 yards. The Iphone won’t cut it. Ordered a Canon Powershot with a 40x optical zoom when I got back to the truck. Should be here Wednesday.

Made it back for another sit this evening. Sounds like a logging crew moved in on the company land about a quarter mile to the south.

I saw an unfamiliar truck down there on the highway when I parked yesterday. I thought hunter but I guess it was a logger or company man. The 120 acres of company pine plantation is about 20 years old. I will be suprised if they don’t clearcut it. The 120 makes an “L” and borders us for a quarter mile and corners with our southern most 40 at another point. The 40 on the inside of the “L” belongs to another company but I have it leased.

Regardless of if they clear it or thin it there will be better habitat there than waht a 20 year old unthinned plantation holds.3B7F5A49-F86A-43BF-93CB-2E60D018CC20.jpeg

Good bit of shooting in the refuge on Saturday. Son and I both saw bucks chasing on our place.

Im back at the camp. Got in about midnight. Got a hang on set up. Will stash it after this weekend and use until season ends at the end of January. Got to bring another section of steps when I come back. 329AFB28-8821-4597-8049-1927EB19E9D7.jpegF1B0993C-0E93-4407-AA5B-52221057473D.jpeg16DFBEF7-48EA-4390-8261-15C4BA7C86B6.jpeg

The ground ia graveled with these water oak acorns everywhere I go. Makes the deer hunting tough as they don’t have to get far from their beds to feed.

Got my climber deployed this afternoon. My son drew this hunt as well so I am going to let him hunt the spot I showed last weekend. We have called that spot
“The Killing Tree” for a long time. If the deer move around much at all it is as good a place as any and a better place than most.

I hope he gets some action in the morning.
