My husband and I live in central Oklahoma, so we are not able to scout elk wintering grounds reguarly. We were excited to start a new challenge in our life, but we're unsure if it would be a realistic goal, since we aren't in the area. We love to hunt and we're trying to find something exciting to pass time until turkey season, since waterfowl season is slowing winding down. Do any of you all live out of state and have success shed hunting? Any help would be greatly appriecated, specially if we are just wasting our time wishing to have luck in finding any sheds.

Thanks,
Cambra

When does turkey season start? Elk drop their antlers much later than deer (usually March/April).

I have found all my sheds during hunting season. Usually they are in the outlying areas from the wintering grounds that the hardcore shed heads comb over. Farther away during mild winters. Being on Horseback helps since you can scan the ground while the cayuse picks the easiest route. It is very simiar to hunting, where you have to get away from the crowds. Some of the Biggest, don't come in to the Winter grounds...

Focus on south facing slopes, fence lines, hay fields (farmers HATE getting a Shed in a Tractor tire). I've glassed up sheds across a drainage more than once in the fall.

Find out where Dinkshooter is going, then stalk him, and then pass him on the trail with your ATV. Guaranteed to find sheds.

Thats called "brownleeing" and dinkshooter takes that chit serious. In fact I think I hear a side by side getting ready for a weekend romp....

Inside sources say he is in Mexico flying his ultralight for east coast desert muley buck hunters who think he is a legend.

Aren't in the area? Not able to scout wintering grounds? Get off your arse and quit making up excuses that don't exist. You don't have to live in Montana to look for elk sheds. In Oklahoma there are several places to go hunt for elk sheds on pubic land without even leaving the state. I've found plenty in Spavinaw and if you live in the central part of the state just go to the Wichita Mountains, thousands of elk there. Quit wishing and start walking. Jeez Okies are a lazy.

In Oklahoma, the largest free-ranging elk herds can be found on the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, as well as at Pushmataha, Cookson Hills, Spavinaw and Cherokee wildlife management areas. Small herds also inhabit private land in Kiowa, Comanche and Caddo counties.

Don't be a dick, we have MM for that.
Not being a dick. Just can't listen to people, without being a smartass, who would whine about not having access to elk sheds when the elk live less than a couple of hours away on public land.

Especially when you find out they are Outfitters who do guided hunts all over Oklahoma.

Yep,
Some outfitter sending his wife on the forum to advertize their website and troll for business.

Times like these when hunt talk sites suck --- people getting Teo'OWd :) by jerks slumming and looking to snake in on hunting spots.
Pathetic.

Thank you for the advise...I appreciate the response! I enjoyed the pictures, it fun to see what others are getting...good luck this hunting season

Yeah, I do some guiding under my dad's business. We still have normal jobs and don't rely on a guiding income. We are do it on your own hunts, we put in for draws hunts just like the general public and don't get any special service. So it wasn't just some husband sending his wife to "troll for business". I was just looking for any kind of advice for shed hunting. I thought this would be positive feedback from many, not just from a few...thank you for the positive responses i received.

...thought we'd at least get a pic of Dinkshooter's shed decorated duvet on this thread.

Excuse the rude folks cambra, they haven't been to a Texas cotillion class yet.;)
