Late Season Bull Tag unit 5A

My wife and I are new to Arizona, and newer to Elk hunting in general. She mentioned to me when we moved here from Illinois that since we enjoy elk so much, we should go get our own. Lucky man. I have been hunting for the first 20 years of my life in the Midwest, all whitetails and bows. Neither of us have shot a big game animal with a rifle.
Long story short, we are full time AZ residents and can spend some time scouting with all the vacation time we have. Question is, where?
Any suggestions as to where to start, access and the like would be appreciated. We couldn't dream of affording a guide, but we can put in the work to make this a successful hunt.

Welcome to Az. 5A is a great unit to hunt. I would recommend getting a Flatline hunting map. Flatline.com has many of the Az units mapped and they show a much greater detail than the Forest Service maps. I live in Flagstaff and know that Bull Basin Archery carries them, but am sure other hunting shops would carry them. Good Luck!

I'd suggest getting a onxmap for Arizona to help learn the terrain and boundaries, good luck hunting!
