Headed to Nebraska on Thursday afternoon. A 10 hour drive to Chadron. Arrived at 11:00 PM. Events on the way 1. hit a hen pheasant while crossing South Dakota, going 80+ miles per hour. Right into the drivers windshield. Scared the crap out of me. How the windshield never broke is beyond belief. 2. Pulled over by the Nebraska State Patrol 12 miles from Chadron on Hwy #61. What was this guy doing out on a desolate highway at 10:45 PM?????????????? Just a warning. He was very appreciative that I told him I had a concealed firearm under the seat No problem.
Hunted Friday morning. Started at 8 AM due to the long drive. No birds. Then went to my honey hole for the evening and only saw hens. One gobble in the distance.
Saturday set up in another honey hole. 4 hens came by. One gobble in the distance. I am sure that the 22 degree temp. sure didn't help.
Sunday I moved the blind 60 yards up the hill so that the birds might see the decoys better. 47 degree morning and lots of gobbles on the roost. Strutting 100 yards across the valley. They disappeared. 9:30 the gobbles start once more. 200 yards up the valley. I call really hard and loud. I must leave in 1/2 hour so I have nothing to lose. All of a sudden a gobble to my left. So loud I knew that he was very close. Two soft purrs and he pops up out of the ravine at 8 yards and in strut. That was close enough. 9:50 the bird was dead. 10 minutes before I had to leave for home.
good luck to all
