Last hunt for '08

I had the same thing happen that Oak did one time as well. I got lucky though and the elk was standing the right way. Took careful aim right behind the shoulder at about 60 yards and shot it right through the neck.

Checked my rifle at the end of the season...shooting about 18 inches to the right at 100 yards.

Maybe checking zero a couple times throughout the hunting season wouldnt be such a bad idea.

I did that twice this year, once right before I went to Montana and again before I went to Arizona.

My, to this only point, two chances I've had at bull elk were spoiled by a gun that was 'off'. I dinged the heck out of my scope on Kodiak hunting blacktails and when I got home I double checked the zero. Three shots in about a 1.5" group 2" high at 100yds...right where I wanted it. I head off to ID deer/elk hunting and shot a nice buck. About six days later I get a shot at a slightly skitish spike elk and miss three times with all shots at less than 200yds. I figure it was just poor shooting. Two days later I get a shot at a 5pt as it's moving through the lodgepole and miss again!! Once back home I check my zero and I'm over a foot left and about that again high! Needless to say, I'm quite the advocate of two things: 1. Check zero often, even during hunting season, 2. Always have a backup right ready and repeat #1 with that rifle.

Congrats Buzz. So I guess I should ask if the gun is sighted in before using it to shoot an elk?

Hope you and the Mrs had a great Christmas.
