ISO Remington Model Seven 7mm-08

Hey gang - I haven’t been here in a while, but it occurred to me this may be a good spot to ask if anyone is looking to part ways with a Remington Model 7 in 7mm-08. In particular, I’m looking for one with the laminate stock.

I owned one back in the early 2000’s but made the regrettable decision to sell it. This rifle has been insanely difficult to find out on Al Gore’s internet so if anyone has any leads, I’d sure appreciate it!!

Model 7s are awesome, just a little smaller and lighter than a short action 700. The problem is that most of them have that junk lock Remington put onto the bolts back in the day. I had one built by @van franke on a Defiance AnTi receiver in the Model 7 footprint. Its the best shooting gun I've ever owned, and I really appreciate the extra compact and lightweight of the 7.

If Defiance is still making that receiver, I'd highly recommend building off one. Before Van told me about the Defiance, I'd already purchased a factory model 7 for a donor and sent it to him. It was too far out of spec for it to be blueprinted, and he said that is a common problem with the 7s.

One thing to consider is the Howa Superlite. Its basically the Howa version of the Model 7, bigger action than a Mini, smaller than a standard short action, and available in 7mmHT. The Howa actions have a ton in common with the 7 and 700, just with some nice improvements. I helped a friend with his new Superlite in 308, it shoots great and handles like a Model 7 imo.

ETA: There are a few 7s in 7ht on gunbroker right now going for under $1k currently, might be the easy button. I hope you find one, I'll keep my eyes open here locally.

I had no idea that Defiance built a model seven action, that would have been an awesome platform to build on. It looks like the new owners dropped that action though.

I’ve been fortunate with mine, all have been about one inch guns but they do tend to be light in the front and want to jump.

I’m with @turbobrick, if you can pick one up off GB for less than $1k I’d go that route. I’ve never owned one of the laminates but that little extra weight in the stock probably only helps the rifle.

Two more similar options - Bergara released the Stoke last year, very similar size to the model seven.
If you could find a Kimber Adirondack those are pretty sweet little rifles and you can have control round feed (for the really dangerous deer).

Because at one point I had one, and with hand loads it was deadly accurate and the way they were built suits the way I hunt. I prefer smaller, lightweight rifles. Out west I hunt with a Remington model 7 XCR chambered in 300WSM. It's very similar in stature to the 7mm-08, but without that awesome laminate stock.

I've looked at all sorts of different rifles that are similar in size/weight, but this particular rifle is one I want back. I've kicked myself for selling it ever since I did. One other option I have considered is just buying whatever model 7 I can find in 7mm-08 and fitting it with a laminate stock, but to me that's not "the original" and I'm afraid I won't be happy with anything but the original, factory made setup. This is more a historical deal for me than it is a concern over specs/receiver tolerances, etc.

I have one in a .260 Remington I considered selling after a bad day at the range. Im glad I didn't, it's an extremely accurate rifle and more than capable of shooting very tight groups. I don't know much about the 7mm-08 but I bet it would be great

I've been all over the various gun sites, including Gunbroker, looking for one, but man are they impossible to find. I believe the 7mm-08 was only made for a handful of years before the rifle was discontinued, so I'm sure it's just a matter of low overall inventory floating around.

They pop up fairly regularly, I was looking at one of the laminates before I bought my last one.

You could always just pick up a model seven in 7mm-08, Boyd’s has that same pattern available and you could customize the stock to your liking.

You saw one on Gunbroker? I look there pretty regularly and have never seen a 7mm-08. Some .308, but not what I'm looking for! I considered the Boyd's option as well...

I had a model 7 in 7saum.

I got it from a pawn shop in Utah. It had an after market paint job by some teenage knuckle head that I couldn't live with.

So, whilst waiting for new paint to dry,
I tried it in a boyds stock, and it shot lights out.

Also have one in 260 with the faster twist, which just might be the perfect Model 7. I had an original laminate in 308, but I swapped the laminate to my 260 then sold the 308, probably shouldn't have! Love the rifle, and the Mod 7 generally. It currently doesn’t get much use…but maybe someday.

I have a 7mm-08 mountain rifle, which I also think is the perfect balance for that model. So much so that I just sold my mint gem of a 280 mountain rifle. But I would take the 7mm08 over the 280 on any “mountain rifle” hunt. So i reluctantly moved it along to make room
and raise some funds.

I bought my son a model 7 in 7mm08 mountain rifle, put him a Swarovski scope on it for him. Had him a rifle for his grandkids to hunt with. That was in the late 90's. Then the gun got stolen. I never want to own a stolen gun. I think about that gun from time to time and hope one day it will show back up.

I saw that and I am intrigued by it. I need to do some research on the 260, though. I've never used that round.

The 260 Remington is an impressive round. I shot an elk through both shoulders with it at about 100 yards this November, and I have friend that has killed 3-4 elk and a mountain goat with it.. Mine shoots 140 grain core-loks really good.
We had a 7mm-08 and it was too much recoil for my kids and they shoot a box of 20 260 with no issues.
