Having just retired
, and now, finally able to spend the time out in the outdoors I have begun getting ready for Elk. Unfortunately, I'm a little behind the time curve for getting into the draws in some states. On the other hand, I've just started out Elk hunting and wouldn't have enough points to even be a consideration for some of the premier units anyway. But, I now have time to plan and obtain the needed equipment for Elk.
I've killed quite a few mule deer, whitetails, and hogs in my life time, with both rifle and bow. But, I'm sure most of us can always use, "just one more rifle"
I love the TC Dimension, frankly because I like quality modular weapons systems. I've found the Dimension to be very adequate, and since I reload all my rounds, I've been able to get very good accuracy with all my variations of the Dimension. I'm currently waiting for TC to put more barrels and bolts on the market for the .300 Win Mag, which I believe will be great Elk medicine.
That leaves me with my tried and true, .308 Win. With my hand loads, using Lapua brass, Fed 210 primers, 41gr of Varget powder. I can get about 2500 fps at the muzzle and 2400 ft lbs using a 180 gr Sierra SPBT. At 200 yards, I'm looking at about 2074 fps and roughly 1690 ft lbs. Even at 400 yards I'm still holding about 1250 ft lbs.
Having never taken an Elk, and until I can get my .300 Win Mag, are these numbers for the .308 adequate for a humane harvest of a nice bull Elk?
