Invasive Hippos

Ok so... serious question. I'm no biologist.

If the hippos are causing that much ecological damage, what exactly is the downside to the "whack 'em and stack 'em"? I guess what I'm asking is... Even if the animals are sterilized, they'll still expire at some point, leaving an 8000lb carcass anyways, so...

Nevermind.....
Colombian Veterinarian's probably have alot of influence?
1. They are charismatic mega fauna
2. Locals guide tourists to see they so they don’t want them killed.

They almost made it to Louisiana.

Hippos imported from Africa and raised in the bayous of Louisiana, proponents argued, would provide a delicious new source of protein for a meat-hungry nation. In the process, the animals would gobble up the invasive water hyacinth that was killing fish and choking off waterways. It would be an epic win-win. A bill was introduced in Congress, and newspaper editorials extolled the culinary virtues of "lake cow bacon."
