Randy doesn't hunt Idaho because the deer quality is lower than MT.
As far as where to hunt in Idaho, I'd go to a place you can hunt until Oct 31 that's a little bit off the beaten path. That would make it easier to thin out the hunter numbers especially since you won't be backpacking far into the unit. I'd look at places with big country. Beaverhead Zone, Salmon Zone, Pioneer Zone elk zones--they all are treated as individuals units for deer but they're the same general area. I don't like dealing with the private property issues and hunters stacked together like I've heard of SE Idaho.
I go back to my native Idaho and hunt OTC deer most years. It's usually the favorite hunt of the year. My dad still manages to get out, the kids love the time there.
It's mild terrain, heavily hunted, illegal ATV use is rampant.
It's a lazy hunt with a luxury camp. We hunt mornings and evenings and eat large lunches followed by naps...every day.
I usually find a mature buck. I don't always kill it, but I do find them.
