My current plans are to drive from Salt Lake City to Jackson Wyoming in September.

I have been looking at the possibility of stopping in southern Idaho to try for a bear in unit 76 (Diamond Creek). Harvest Statistics show a lot of the bears harvested are taken over baits.

Would it be realistic to try a spot and stalk hunt in this unit early - mid September?

Always worth a try, what have the local biologists said about terrain, habitat and food sources of the bears at that time of the year in there?

Kiwi,
l don't have first hand knowledge of that unit, but in Sept. the bears will be feeding voraciously on the last berries. It would be realistic to spot and stalk in any unit IMO.

Good point about the biologists, planning to give them a call tomorrow.

Thanks Gerald.

Called the biologists and got some great info. Looking at the central ID units now, sounds like it will be worth a detour of a couple of hours to head over towards Boise.

Forget about bears, that's prime elk season! Spring bear hunting is more fun IMO, but either way you'll have fun.

I agree twsnow18!, I have a Wyoming elk tag (just this minute got it in the mail :) ) and really just looking at a second tag in case I tag out early on the elk. I would love to hunt bear in the spring but can only do one trip a year.

Makes sense. The good news is you can wait until the last second and grab your bear tag at the grocery store if you tag out early in WY.

Some good info here, I have actually been trying to plan a northern ID black bear hunt with my brother near Coure De Lane (sp?), ID in the next year. I've heard they are plenty, and the tags aren't that expensive. Good luck!

Thanks hansontyrel. Still doing my research and might end up bear hunting in western Wyoming.

Coeur d'Alene is a beautiful spot, have a great hunt.

I'm still researching and having trouble finding info on fall bear hunting. Specifically, my question is Wyoming public and private land bear hunting in the fall much different in terms of hunter success? As I cant afford a guide I was thinking perhaps there is a way to pay for private land access and increase my chances. I know this is an option for deer and elk etc, but perhaps bear hunting is different?
