How to mount a gun over fireplace

I need ideas. This is for my mom. She has her great grandads musket he carried in the civil war. Terrible shape, fire place not in use. Flat brick back drop. What’s the best / simplest way to hang this and display it for her? Do I tapcon into the bricks or mortar? Anyone with experience, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Into the mortar. You'll need a hammer drill and masonry bit. Many drills have a hammer drill setting. The tapcon should say what size bit you need.

Not sure, it’s in a basement, so I’m not sure if they just layed the brick against the foundation or still had some sort of 1x1 wall behind it

A Tapcon will work in the grout for light things. Lots of options with mollies also. I'd start with a Tapcon. If it doesn't work you can always use a molly. Dang Tapcons are blue. We always black them out or hide them if possible. mtmuley

I had to display some Indian artifacts in a client's home. Had these made at a local metal shop. Made them rusty with a solution I forget the name of. I also have hung an oxen yoke with railroad spikes. Lots of options. mtmuley

I like that! I think I might have access to some old original spikes like that out of some old barn material

The spikes are really cool. If you choose not to go that route I ended up using these to hang my kit muzzleloader in the house. It came with blacksmithed screws to go into wood but I'm sure you could find some masonry screws in the same diameter.

Calcium chloride should work iirc.

Thanks for all the insight on this. I ended up finding a couple old railroad spikes, bent them 90, then tapconed them into the bricks. She was happy with the result.

Beautiful. Tapcons are the ticket for brick or concrete! Now you should have about 4-6 left for the next time you need to put a screw in concrete or mortar!

Yeah, I think I'd find some grey plastic mollies instead of those big blue tapcon heads...

Nice job, what's the history on your ancestor? Any info on his enlistment dates or engagements? Fascinating history and a priceless heirloom she has. I'm just wondering the stories it holds.

I’ll ask her later today. She does all the ancestry stuff very diligently. I do know she has his sword sheath as well. Beings we’re in the middle of a blizzard, I’ll get what info I can from her and report back.
