So…I am helping a friend with his first ever elk hunt. We are n the Gila in NM unit 16A. Last night he shot a bull. He was not sure of the yardage and held for 30. We had really good blood for the first 250 yards. The bull then turned up a steep slope and we quickly lost blood.
One of my hunting buddies believes bulls will hang around carcasses of fallen bulls. We had a bugle go off 400-500 yards away. He is following that. We also saw a bear in the area this morning but it was just traveling through.
I think I heard his bull bugling this morning and moving off with his cows. He is not sure where he hit it and didn’t get a pass through. We cant smell the bull and no birds on the carcass yet. Any helpful ideas?
