Hiking Distance

I have hit right at the same as Fec, and you sure feel it for the next couple day's, feels like you end up trying to recover after being run over by a truck...

When I was 17, we hiked from the Scout camp to the peak of San Gorgonio (12,000 some foot elevation), passing San Bernardino peak, and back to camp in one night. We left about 9 PM and go back to camp at 8 AM. This involved about 5000 feet up and back down, as well as 23 miles, roundtrip. We puked many times. But we did it. All we carried was some water.

As a Boy Scout, we did several 20 mile hikes over the years. More often, 10 miles were covered. At 14, I hiked up Mt. Whitney (14, 495 feet, I think.) We hiked to Mirror Lake, spent the night there and then went to the summit and back all the way to the campgrounds at the trail head. Come to think of it, I puked several times then too.

I once did a 24 hour tramp with who was my soon to be father in law over the three pass trip from the East coast to the West coast of the South Island, thats over the Cronin, Whites and Browning passes, it was a Winter trip and slogging up the Browning in snow was no fun, we stopped a couple of times to boilup in mountain huts and had a snooze in the stxy valley hut on the way out, miles I dunno 50 odd, I tramped with him a lot all over the southern alps untill he had a stoke at 70 and died, now I do the same with his daughter,my wife but nowhere to that extreme.
