My Wife and I have Primitive Tags for Section 9 in New Mexico. Does anyone have any experience from this part of N.M. My only Elk Hunt was last year during the rut in Montana. Don't know what to expect. The season begins on October 10. Will they still be in the rut, what's the weather like? As you can tell, we need a lot of help. It is on a private ranch. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Unit 9

Howdy I think your best bet will be around the northern part of the Mt Taylor. Around the Pinon Juniper Mesas on the northern part of the unit. You have to get away from the roads and find your water sources like tanks and small feeder creeks and springs. There are some nice bulls in this unit. look for fresh rubs near the water areas and keep on moving to find wallows. Good luck with you hunt. If you need anything drop me a line.. ManzanoMadness

Thanks a lot ManzanoMadness - It will be our first hunting trip to New Mexico. Do you have a general idea of the weather? I will keep everyone updated. I don't care if I kill out, but it will be awesome if my wife does.
Thanks - Mike

Hey Mike the weather is usually clear but this year it has been wet. Last year the 1st 2 weeks were monsoon but after that was great. Cant say what it will do this year. But that Mt Taylor makes its own weather. Be ready for hot cold and everything in between. Also if you can tell me what ranch your hunt is on I can help you what kind of terrain you will be hunting. How many acres is the ranch?

ManzanoMadness - The ranch is a little over 10,000 acres and it is nearly an hour due West of Albequerque and it is in Section 9. We are going with a friend that knows a friend, that knows a friend, that owns the ranch. The friend of mine has not been there either. He has seen videos from the last 3 or 4 years and says it is awesome. I am sorry to say, this is about all I know of the place. I am a little discouraged by that. Actually the friend of mine, his son which works in China is flying in and going with us. If I find anything else out, I will keep you posted. Thanks for your help. - Mike
