Another vote for the Missouri Breaks. A friend and I finally did it a few years back and now we've made it an annual event. I loved the Boundary Waters too but that's been almost 30 years ago. I understand that now there is a quota of BWCA entry permits per summer and you have to reserve one right away when they become available or you're out of luck.

There is a permit system with quotas from May thru Sept 30 but many are available and never go used. The more popular routes will fill when they first become available.
