Help Me Legalize Semiauto Rifle Big Game Hunting In Pennsylvania

PA born and bred. This is a no from me. Most folks can work a pump or bolt plenty fast to harvest deer and bear. ARs are fine and dandy for the range, but folks need to take some pride in their craft (hunting/shooting) such that they don’t need to tote a semi automatic around.

No way would I support semi actions for big game hunting. We have way way to many people afield per acre. One shot one kill

Probably few. As with most things lately, logic is rarely applied.

And 2 of my favorite rifles are single shots, soon to be a third.
I have a friend with a son who is very short, a long way from a regular rifle, but our Rock River Varmint in .223 Wylde with 77gr TGKs fit him perfectly last season. So they have their place.

And, not in Montana, for sure, but nationally, we need more hunters, not fewer. Kids like to shoot ARs. And just as Constitutional Carry did not lead to the predicted Wild West, neither did ARs for hunting lead to more wounded animals or shooting accidents. You can buy 5 round mags dirt cheap.

So, personally, I'm with the wood and steel crowd, but looking to the future, we'd better hang together or we shall certainly hang separately. I think I read that somewhere 😉

Thanks Longbow,

I, also, own single shots and hunt with them. I even have a double rifle that I slapped a couple of deer with.

I, also, own and hunt with lever actions, bolts, pumps and wheel guns. I own semiauto pistols, but can't hunt with them in Pa. either.

Avid Compound bowhunter here, also. Before some of the previous posters wail, "Who needs the speed and range of a compound!" let it be known that I also have a recurve and a longbow that still get some use afield.

As stated in the petition, Pa. currently allows semiauto rifles to be used for small game and furbearers as well as the use of semiauto shotguns for deer with slugs.

Just trying to drag my state into the realm of normal, but hey, I guess were smarter than the other 49 states, huh?

Hope you signed the petition after reading. If you did, you have my thanks. If you didn't, you have my respect for at least giving it a read.

Stay safe and happy hunting!

🙋‍♂️ I give you credit for putting it together I am just not compelled to sign on. No hard feelings. I know there's plenty of people that will sign something like that. Good luck and good hunting.

I read it from start to finish and my previous comment stands. This is a solution in search of a problem. If you want to be successful in the field, it begins and ends with the time you invest. I have yet to meet a muzzleloader hunter who has issues filling their late season tag.

Beyond that, I find it….interesting? coincidental? disingenuous?…that you’ve been a member here for about as long as it takes to drink a cup of coffee and are soliciting signatures for a petition. Maybe put some effort into contributing, developing rapport, and getting to know the community here before asking people to attach their name to your initiative. Just my two cents.

I own two muzzleloaders: one smokeless and a flintlock and hunt with both.

I am an avid hunter and competition shooter who invests a great amount of time honing my skills on the range as well as in the field.

I agree with you that the delivery system doesn't matter as long as the mark is hit on the first shot, but I am not about to tell someone that they should only hunt with a bow or a muzzleloader because you should only need one shot. I am sure you realize that smoke pole shooters and bow hunters, who know they will only get on shot, have missed or worse wounded game. It's not a perfect world out there.

My truck has over 400hp. Do I need it all the time? Nope, but it's nice to have it when I do. Just like having the option of a follow up shot, whether it be from a bolt, pump, lever or semi.

Being against a faster more accurate follow up shot because it is too quick is akin to mandating that cars should be built to achieve 55 mph and no more, because when would ever need to go faster. Get rid of those pesky passing zones, too!

I am successful in the field regardless of what weapon I use. I am ethical in the field regardless of what weapon I use. I am law abiding in the field regardless of what weapon I use.

Regulating the weapon out of ignorance or fear is the solution in search of the problem in gun control as well as in hunting.

Many thanks for taking the time.

I respect your opinion.
I think you're going to be better off meeting with individual elected officials and requesting them to sponsor legislation as well as utilizing the public comment period at a PGC Board of Commissioners meeting.

Getting any appreciable number of hunters to agree with you on the internet is a lost cause
