Hi all, I’m Euan from Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. I’m currently studying a degree in Forestry, whilst working in the forest and deer management industries. Prior to starting my degree, I was a deer culler for the Scottish government. The main species of deer I shoot are Red, Roe, Fallow and Sika. Look forward to getting to know you all!

Welcome! My wife and I flew into Inverness in 2018 and hunted Red Stag at Dalnacardoch Estate with Kevin Simpson for our honeymoon. The people in Scotland were the nicest folks I've ever met hands down. We volunteered to be beaters for some driven shoots and rough hunts on a few other estates as I've done some guiding in the states and wanted to experience a small piece of the working end of things with hunting in Scotland. Seeing the sheer number of wild grouse and planted pheasant and partridge and having several after hunt dinners and drinks with the gamekeepers and other folks working as beaters was an experience well never forget.

I didn't know what to think about driven hunts coming in, but all the dogs, dog work, pellets raining down and the smell of gunpowder was quite the experience. I think I'd rather be a beater than a shooter on a driven hunt any day.

Also, the right to roam in Scotland was amazing. Being from the states, I couldn't believe that we could just walk anywhere on private land. Simply amazing.

Welcome to the forum, Euan. You have shot some fine animals. That Roe buck is amazing. My wife grew up near Aberdeen. We have always enjoyed the Scottish countryside. What rifle/caliber are you shooting?

welcome and thanks for posting. this is a great site, I'm sure u will enjoy. looks like you're on the path for a rewarding vocation in wildlife but the forest looks pretty sparse there

I’m glad you loved Scotland! I do a lot of beating during the shooting season.

Welcome to HT!
Of those, which is the most game flavored and best tasting?
The Red deer has the strongest tasting venison with the Roe deer having the least tasty but most tender venison. My preference for eating is Sika or Fallow as its still flavourful but tender, and Sika and Fallow do very well on poorer ground so they often have much more fat than Red or Roe, especially Sika, making really good steaks.
