I started looking for a replacement for my Colt Custom (lost by USPS) which was going to be an heirloom gun that I'd like to pass down the family. In my search I came across the mythical O1911CZ. This is the model that doesn't show up anywhere on Colt.com.
This is the 1911C but without any roll marks or other engraving (other than COLT'S PT.F.A MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A. and the serial number). It is the perfect gun for custom engraving; a true clean slate. After a couple of phone calls and emails, I was able to purchase one. It is on it's way to the engraver to begin it's new story, that of our family and the 13 generations here in the USA, dating back to 1633. I will keep it stock from Colt, standard iron sights, no magwell, no beavertail. Just the classic.
I still wanted a stainless steel Colt though, one with an NM barrel, Series 70, and Novak fiber optic sights, and one that can withstand daily use without losing it's finish. I decided that I wanted a Colt Competition Stainless Steel 45 ACP. I found one at a gun store that I've purchased from in the past. This too is on it's way to the engraver, but it will have a different story; it will be my personal story - my time in the USAF. The engravings will be of my different badges that I wore, locations that I've served in around the world, and other items that have meaning only to me. This will get an ambidextrous safety and magwell installed.
The heirloom will get shot, but not as often as the personal gun. Should the original show up one day, I'll then have another Colt in the corral.
