Headed to Nebraska

First off Wes and I had a great time, but the Whitetail hunting was tough as the Lake that had been down and supplied the Whitetail Habitat was now up high greatly reducing the opportunities for Whitetail hunting and it was crowded. As in take a number please!
We got up to Brule, Nebraska last Thursday and got set up in our Cabin. Friday we went to Lake Ogallaga and caught a mess of Rainbow Trout which is always fun.

Jimmy from Eagle Canyon Hideaway had talked to a Landowner who owned quite a bit of land he said we could hunt on with the stipulation that if you shot a Muley Buck $150 would be donated to a US Serviceman Fund. I really liked that. The property was shown to us and that night at supper everyone was talking about where they would like to get. When I think of Mule Deer hunting I think of Canyons and Cedars, just wide open spaces to glass. So I stood and said that we all needed to state where we were going to hunt. Most wanted to hunt next to or on the man's wheat and corn fields, I pointed to the Sandhills and Canyons as where Wes and I would hunt. Here is what we hunted.

Opening morning we walked in to the Sandhills where I put Wes on a point overlooking two ravines and I took the next high point to cover 2 more ravines. Right away Mule Deer were everywhere, I watched 40 something deer and a real wide 2 point for the longest, but passed. I noticed some deer staring at something up high and saw that they were staring at a Strawberry colored Coyote and that he had a pretty good vantage point so I walked up there to sit. He ran off leaving his Breakfast!

As I was sitting there I thought I heard Wes shoot so I walked back to my original position and motioned to Wes "Did you shoot?" Wes is all excited so I walk up there and he related his story.
Wes had been walking and watching all the Deer, just enjoying the moment in the field when he looks over and a 5x5 is staring up at him. Wes said he had to swing around to shoot the Buck, Booyah! Wes' hunt for a muley was over at about 7:30 opening morning.

Wes went back out to the Highway and drove my Rhino to load up his deer while I chose to spend the day in the Sandhills. By days end I must have seen 65 Mule Deer and passed on 3 bucks. I was ready to go back home without a Muley if it meant I had to shoot an inmature Dink!;) It really reminded me of Colorado in the 70s. In Nebraska it is not a matter of if the wind blows but just how hard! I was pretty beat the first day. (Fat man syndrome).
There was a real nice 5x5 shot by a man from West Virginia, it was 300 yards he said. He held for the heart and shot it's lower jaw! The deer actually gagged to death!
The next day Wes wanted to try and fill his Whitetail Doe tag and others were wanting to hunt the Muley property so I went with Wes hunting along the Lake. I found some great sign, not real hard just look anywhere around Tree stands and ground blinds! LOL It was just too dang crowded with the locals and NRs hunting a shrunken area like we were. One of the West Virginia boys killed a real nice Whitetail buck.

So now we have one more day to hunt and Wes is telling me to go back over and hunt the Muley property as you can shoot a Muley Doe and tag it with your Buck Tag......ugh right! As first light was breaking I walk out to the place everyone is telling me to go, Wheat Field! I am hunting with a Father and son from W. Virginia, super folks! As I watch the Deer move from the Feeding areas to their Bedding areas I have deer 20 yards from me, Does. Not gonna do it! I watch a large Buck with 9 does start to leave and the son Jimmy makes a move on them. After a while I hear a shot and I stand up to look though my Binos at Jimmy standing over a Deer, well it's about 7 and here comes his Dad in a Side by side and I jump in to help. Jimmy is right in the start of the Sandhills. Here is his Muley.

After the Buck is loaded I tell them I am going to walk the 3/4 miles back to the far gate where they can pick me up as I was going to make something happen! I left them my pack and extra clothes and start walking. I think hunting like this is the greatest feeling in the world......well maybe there is one other! As I am slipping along and climbing the Hills I stop to let myself adjust just in case I have to shoot I won't be gasping for air. I top a hill and scan the area and down in the bottom of a Ravine is a group of Muleys and one is a mature tall Buck, breeding a Doe! Being the Gentleman that I am I let him finish and get into a prone position to make the shot. The Buck ranged at 345 yards, at the sound of the shot he folds, Booyah x 2!!!!!!!!!!!! I had my buck that I had held out for all this hunt.

As a 21 year old Kid I had shot a 33 inch 5x5 in Colorado, before it could die a womand shot it in the neck, I helped load that Buck into her truck! Now although it is not a 33 inch buck it is a real fine Mule Deer that I will cherish. Thanks for following along! John

Nice job, and thanks for being the "Gentleman". May you come back in about 5 years to get his offspring!
