My heroes have always been cowboys, and they still are today. Whenever I get around Birney, I stop and see Irv. He is 91 and conversation is like talking to Charles M. Russell.

We found him a few years back with his side by side broken down, several miles back in the hills. In his mid 80’s he had walked all the way back to the ranch and we helped him retrieve his Gator with a broken front end and no steering.

He told us at this stage in his life he doesn’t buy green bananas and he lives by 2 rules: Stay out of the way and keep my mouth shut, but I have trouble the second rule.

What a privilege to know such a delightful man with the character that makes Montana attract all the out of staters…
