I found short ribs on sale, so I’m doing birria tacos that’ll be ready to eat during the Hurricanes hockey game this afternoon.

Sinko de Mayo, so we are setting the record straight here.

Back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England, and the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the spread scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, the next port of call after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico but as we know, the great Titanic did not make it to New York. The ship sank and the cargo was lost forever.

The people of Mexico, who are crazy about mayonnaise, were inconsolable at their loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a national day of mourning on May 5th, which they still observe to this day, and it is known, of course as Sinko de Mayo.

Go out on this day, grab a couple of slices of Bimbo bread and a jar of Hellman's mayonnaise, and declare a party!

And, no, contrary to many foreigner's misconception, this is not Mexico's independence day. You will have to wait until September 16 for that. That gives us time to cook up another good urban legend.

Looks good, I was craving carne asada so marinated some flank steak, didn't even think about Cinco de mayo though, was a day early. My margaritas were the slightly cheaper handle of Kirkland tequila, but pretty tasty still. Sorry no pics, but leftovers today.
