Hanging with the ladies

Thanks for the comments guys. Mariah has a few more days to hunt whitetails, so we're going after school on Wednesday and Thursday. Makes me proud that a 14 year old girl brags to her friends at school about getting to go deer hunting.

that is awesome. Loving the Washington State sweater even though I am a Vandal. Can't wait til my girls reach hunting age. I have one that won't hesitate to shoot and another that will go and hunt but probably will never pull the trigger. All fine with me. Tell your youngster Congrats!

Well, Mariah and I went yesterday and today. Yesterday we saw deer, but never really had a shot opportunity. Tonight, we sat on in a different ambush spot. We'd been there about an hour or so, and each had a good nap in the sunshine, when Mariah said "Dad, there's a deer!"

We watched a doe feed out from the timber at about 170 yards. Soon, a couple more joined her, and then a small buck until we had six whitetails feeding directly below us at 130 yards. After a brief argument with my daughter over whether she could legally shoot the spike (Big Sky will get the humor in that), I told her to put her scope on a doe that had fed away from the others.

Mariah had a 100 yard broadside, and I told her where to hold the crosshairs and that she could shoot anytime she wanted. The safety went off, her finger went on the trigger, and.......

.........nothing. She took a deep breath and set the gun down. Then, she shouldered it, put her finger on the trigger, and.......

.........nothing. I heard her sigh and drop her head. I squeezed her arm and told her to relax. She looked at the deer again through her scope and said "Dad, I don't think I can do it.". I let her lay there for a bit. The deer had no idea we were there and were still feeding towards at 100 yards. I finally asked her, "do you want to shoot one, or do you want to call it a night?" She said she wanted to call it a night.

We grabbed our gear, and walked back to the truck. I told her again that I was proud of her and that I did not care one bit if she shot a deer or not. We celebrated with milkshakes at Zip's.

One sacked out hunter, but always ready for a milkshake.

A great time had with your daughter!!

We have had a fair share of "aiming practice" with my youngest daughter, and as a result the turkey population of south central Kansas has remained slightly elevated.

Awesome posts! You're doing it right.

Looking forward to hunting with my one and only daughter next year. I'd guess she will be hesitant on the trigger, but who knows until we're there.
