Gunnison basin help

Does anybody have any opions on how the deer are doing in unit 551 i have heard its been rough in the basin just wondering if this one has gotten beet up to. Looking at past years looks like they cant get a break.

Are you asking if this winter has been hard on the deer?

About 4-5 inches of snow in the basin along hwy 50. It melts quick though and most South facing slopes have alot of deer and elk, and very little to no snow. I did see -18 a few weeks ago with a much lower wind chill. Doesn't seem to affect the elk, and the deer I've seen look fat.

Age class has yet to really rebound since the 2007 winter. The herd is still quite young IMO, and the DOW issued too many buck tags to really let it get back up to its glory days. Good luck if you go, there are always a few good ones left running around! Amazing deer country down that way.

i was in 551 late September elk hunting, and saw deer everyday. there were a lot of smaller ones, but did run into some absolute studs.
