September first opines upland birds and doves. It is also the opening of archery for big game.
I don't archery hunt.
The 15th is bear and wolf.
A buddy and I loaded up the 4wheelers and headed uphill, looking for Duskie and ruff grouse.
They tend to like high ridges with open areas in the timber. Most of the time we find them on the wheeler trails or logging roads.
We drove 50 miles of them yesterday. We saw one pile of coyote dung, a few deer, a dozen elk hunters, some hawks, and an eagle.
Two separate grouse, normally there in family groups.
My buddy managed to hit one and the other simply walked away before we could get organized for a shot. We made it up to one of our old fire lookouts.
It's around 8000 feet and I was glad we had stuffed our jackets into the bags on the 4wheelers, 34* at 10:00 am.
