Grizzly Kills Man In Montana

My prayers go out to the family and friends of those effected. Father of two children - very unfortunate.

With that said, it really goes to show, bear identification is valuable. Identify your target and evaluate with certainty it is what you intend to hunt.

Wow! my thoughts with those children and his wife. Very unfortunate!

That is very sad indeed, a very brave guy.

I saw this bear last time i was in Montana.
From this picture would you say it is a black or grizzly bear?

Looks like a black bear to me.I would for sure have to watch it for a while first though before pulling the trigger.

Another picture of same bear.
It was in Yellowstone and we were the first to see it, it was about 100 yards away and we stood by our car, then a warden drove up and shouted that it was a grizzly and told us in no uncertain terms to get back in the car.
This was my second visit to Montana and we had seen a lot of black bears in differing colours, what made this one stand out was the hump, i questioned his identification and he insisted it was a young grizz.

Does anybody know if they were bow or rifle hunting? I thought I read that they were bow hunting, but I can't find it anywhere in an article now. Maybe I just imagined it?

News reports said four guys archery hunting, had split into two twosomes and after wounding the bear, had begun to track the bear when it turned on them.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office in Montana said Stevenson, of Winnemucca, Nev., died Friday after 20-year-old Ty Bell wounded what he thought was a black bear and the two men tracked it into thick cover along the Idaho-Montana border where it attacked at about 10 a.m. Friday.

Wow, I'd hate to have that to remember for the rest of my life.

I've seen a lot and killed many black bears in Montana and have seen many, many grizzlies too. If I'm out bear hunting, I'm pulling the trigger on that bear! I have a chocolate hanging on my wall that could be it's twin!

I'm thinking you must have talked to one of the many college kids that work inside the park every summer and that they probably didn't know their arse from their elbow. It happens all the time. I had a young kid once tell me the coyote trotting down the side of the road was a wolf! LOL I guess that made the tourists taking pictures happy, but it made me laugh as I drove away from the crowd.

Good pictures of the bear though and hope you enjoyed the Park.

In actual fact the guy sounds like he should have known better as he was at least in his mid forties.
So judging by the replies, you all have much more experience in identification they he did so i am with you, black bear.
I also saw this wolf LOL:D

The camera was only a little canon ixus (thanks for the compliment), but it does take a nice pic, and yes we did enjoy the park, and the fly fishing.
Cheers

That is a big old alpha male wolf!!! ;0)

Yep, black bear 100%.

That is horrible that guy got killed. I could see being in that situation... if I thought it was a black, I'd go in brush with bow after it... but not if I knew it was a griz... horrible.

There has been an update to the story. Investigation has discovered the man died from a gunshot wound and not from the bear attack

Wow that has got to be rough to take. I don't know how I'd of handled the situation if my partner was getting chomped on. Do you shoot hoping to save his life or wait and try to get only a clean shot knowing that every second that passes could kill your friend.
