Chukar have been way down here for the last few years but it looks like they are recovering. Did one of my favorite hunts today. It's a steep hike from the river canyon, probably 1000' elevation gain to get to a series of benches that stair step up to a big flat. In years past there are usually birds on the benches all the way up to the flat. Today they were there, got into 5 different bunches. Had a really good hunt, I lasted about 3 hours before hobbling down the hill leaving plenty for next week.

Chukar are becoming one of my favorite pursuits. Good job. If I put up 5 groups I'm lucky to get 2 birds, between being out of breath and on unsure footing I'm lucky to get a shot off!

Those are beautiful canyons where you're at, but they are steep, I get tired just remembering the last time I hunted near there. Congratulations on the birds!

Looks like fun. i am hoping to get out some time this week to chase a few myself.

I always enjoy your bird hunting posts. Elk and muleys are great, but there's just something about chasing those feathered critters that always grabs my heart. Thanks for sharing the hunt.

It's really not too bad a climb if you take your time. The sidehilling and coming back down are harder on me anymore. Once you're up there it's pretty mild terrain for chukar country. There's some water pockets in the rocks on top that hold water for the dog, just break the ice. To take weight off my hips I didn't carry much water and I paid for that last night with leg cramps. It was sure good to see the that many birds after being so scarce for a few years. Thanks for the good words!

Good to see the chukar's are coming back, my grandpa who is 81 was here the 2nd week on Oct. and he love's bird hunting, especially chukars, we got into some but not many, I tried to convince him to go over around brownlee 1 day but never got around to it, mostly stayed in SE OR, congrats on the fine table fair.

Very nice! If I can talk myself into the drive, I'd like to give my 1yo dog a crack at those things in a couple of years.

Say the word. We'll have an OYOA Chukar hunt.
Will do! If I can be convinced that Hank wouldn't freak out being on a plane, I'd probably consider flying and renting a vehicle. That drive from here would be well over 24hrs. Ughh...
