As some of you know I drew a cool tag in AZ. Shooters choice, any weapon, in the peak of the rut, big bulls, low tag holder hunt. The kind of tag that only comes along in a blue moon.

The issue is the rules, which there are plenty. Which, are perfectly navigable for me with my background. I am confident I will go and have a great hunt. But, I am not sure I will have a great time.

This is the type of hunt you want to share with those you cherish. I won’t be able to because of the rules. My favorite hunting partners are my kids. They cannot attend because they are not 16 yet. No phones or photos are allowed in certain areas. Mainly the areas I will be hunting.

This experience will live in only my head and get replayed only in my memory. I can only tell others and show them the rack.

That makes for an interesting mix of feelings towards September. The evolution of it all.

Hunting by yourself is peaceful. Then you progress into the joy of hunting chaos with kids. Guiding and watching them grow. Then seeing them turn into successful hunters and the huge smiles. You want to experience that over and over.

Then they grow up and you hope you get to see them.

I know I’m not the first to go thru this. How have you grown ups dealt with going back to doing hunts by yourselves?

I can honestly say I am looking forward to being part of my Son’s AZ cow hunt more than this tag. Or even going out with Dave to do the WY hunt and sharing the camaraderie. Guess as I’m getting to be a grown up my shared experience matters more than my trophy wall.
The best ones are when you get to do both.

Enjoy your once in a lifetime tag. Hopefully you get a once in a lifetime bull. Have peace about the situation knowing this might be the last time you are the trigger guy on an elk hunt. It is interesting how being the person who actually shoots suddenly isn’t important anymore.

You have me curious.

There is a law that states your kids have to be 16 to tag along?

Also there is a law that prohibits taking a phone and photos in certain areas? I thought wilderness was about as restrictive as it got in that regards.

Yes, it is on a federal installation so the rules are different. I can call them and take pictures / videos outside of the main hunt area.

There is area they could go with me but it’s very small in comparison. Plus it will have civilian hunters in it.

There is quite a bit more to it but that is the basics of it.

We have a hunt like that here in Oklahoma in McAllister on a army ammunition plant. No photos or video inside the hunt area.

I'm just now starting my journey into focusing more on my kids hunting then mine so I don't have much for you. Try and embrace the situation and enjoy the alone time (last about 3 days before it drives me nuts) as much as you can.

So this hunt is on a military base with no phones or camera :) Honestly, that sucks. I'm sure you will have a great time, but man that is stupid.

Oh wow, that used to be a coveted archery tag, likely still is.

Yea special place especially with only Traditional bows. I've hunted it 3 times my dad probably a dozen times. My only complaint is I wish they had a proficiency test. Seen to many guy's show up who only bought there recurve after drawing and just shouldn't be shooting at animals yet IMO.
