Well in 2 days time after 3 phone interviews, a video interview, psychometric tests and a physical exam, my wife and I are being flown from Wellington, New Zealand to Perth, Australia and thence to the Pilbara district of Western Australia for site visit and interview for a position with BHP Billiton.
Are we doing the right thing leaving N.Z. ?

Positives: its only 8 hours flying time away from home, 110k a year +23% superannuation scheme, no interest loan for mortagage, free power and water, only have to work 4 shifts in 9 days and 6 weeks a year leave, personal and company bonuses about 10k tax free a year, great fishing.

Negatives: Its Australia, Only 15,000 in the city, average temp 40C about 110 F all year around, only donkeys, camels, crocs and kangaroos to shoot, 1000 miles from Perth the most isolated city in the Western world.

I'm 47 years old this job will set me up for life and I could retire at 55 with never another care in the world, but ............ its Australia mate :(

Cheers guys let ya know;

P.S Flipper no use replying on December hunting in N.Z untill I figure wtf i'm doing cobber.

My first reaction when I saw the title to this post was wow who's going all the way to Australia? When I saw your name under the title though I thought, well it's Kiwi so it's not really that far off for him.

That's my take on the situation. It's not really that far off.

Though I've got to say, from what I've seen (movies, TV, books) the terrain of W. Aus. is worlds away from the stunning land of New Zealand. That's going to be tough to give up I'd imagine. :(

DUDE........ Don't blink, Do it. Always Take money over everything else. If you get pissed from a Money job you leave and have money. If you get pissed and leave from a Poor job you have nothing ....

If you can maintain sanity, go for it.

I choose quality of life over money.

Moosie, which would you choose for employment? You have to sign a 5 year contract.

New York City- 70 hour weeks $250k annual.

Boise- 50 hour weeks $75k annual.

Kiwi.
My dad was one of the bigwigs for BHP here in the states and also in hawaii( the other state) ;).
He retired from them once, then they asked him to come back again and sent him to hawaii where he retired again.
He was offered a job in Australia but turned it down due to grandkids.

He always said he liked working for BHP
Good luck to you

I am with Moosie GOOD LUCK DUDE!

I would say DO IT!!! Save as much money as Possible and set yourself up for a Beechin retirement! As far as being Hot I think You can afford a Good AC and keepin it cranked!!!

Advance Australia Fair, ha ha, well man do they talk funny over there or what hump , Janet and I have decided to take the job,. the money was just to good to turn down, it will be hard learning to live in the horizontal and the heat, rather than the vertical and the rain ;) but anyways its only like flying from Alaska to Florida to come home anyway  I have tendered my resignation at work, my manager rung to offer me an individual contract, I nominated a figure at which I would stay, for but he said the company couldn't afford it :( , anyway the first big surprise came from the real estate agent, our house which we thought was worth 200k has been valued at 250k minimum :D seems people want 4 bedrooms two living areas and double garaging, yippee, last day of summer here and as I have seen a few good stags in velvet in summer, maybe I can bag one more good red stag before we leave New Zealand.

Kiwi where you going to be in western Australia??? Wife's Dad and brothers are in Broome and Geraldton.. They are mad fishos. Maybe I could hook you up.. Get after some Barra mate.;)

30+ years ago I flew in to Cooper Peady to drop off some specialized mining equipment--one of the hottest, strangest, wildest places I'd ever seen. Is that anywhere near where you're heading?

Thanks guys , yo Ridgie I'll right between them mate in Port Hedland, the company is investing $100 million in a total refit of the operating systems in the rail division with talk of a move of the control centre to Perth :) so heres hoping.
