It looks like GoHunt predicts needing 6 points for 100% draw odds for the Western region of WY.

That bumps my 5 points down to 34% odds. I'd better put in for MT again this year as well!
It looks like they are predicting 6 points for 100% odds across the board for general tags.

I love point creep. Anyone have additional thoughts to offer on this?

I wish i had more insight/statistics - but im curious how many NR western hunters applied for several states 30 years ago as compared to now. I think the popular narrative is that too many people are now interested in western hunting - but id be curious how much thats actually grown relative to the same hunters applying in several states.

I feel like there's 2 types of people. Ones that want to hunt every year, then ones that are okay with waiting a few years between hunts.

I don't know if you needed to apply to more than 1 state 30 years ago. There were a lot more OTC options. So the number is probably significantly higher now.

Personally, I apply to the point where I'm fairly certain I'll get a tag. It involves a lot of moving parts, but I'm not chasing "trophy" units that take 25 points to draw.

Just apply. If you draw, great. If you don't, move on. I wouldn't bank on anything anymore and I wouldn't let myself get excited about a tag until you read successful on draw results.
I've applied to WY, will apply to MT again, if I draw MT, I'll probably withdraw the WY app. Same thing I did last year.

Right - but isnt that a product of a few select people hunting multiple states every year?

You really must love point creep, because you give your hard earned money to a point creep making factory every year. Don’t complain!

Thank goodness there’s always home state hunting to fall back on.

I know I’m dumping my Colorado elk points this year in anticipation of 2028 and whatever that brings. I have six points and don’t feel like I will ever build that many again. Two or three and I will be burning them in the future. I hunted Nebraska this past year for mule deer and Wyoming the year before for antelope. Nebraska was a fall back when we didn’t draw deer tags for Montana. I still feel like Wyoming so far has been the easiest and most budget friendly. If we draw this will be my first hunt in Colorado. With everything going on there being driven by the big cities I hope the future is still friendly towards hunters.

I know people who've lost interest because it's not easy. I think that's a lot of the case with the Covid onset hunters. They're slowly fading back to their previous way of life. Which is good for many of us.

Odds increase if you're not a cheapskate.

Personally I buy my Montana OTC native deer/elk tag every year and a general elk in Wyoming if I don't draw something better.

Already have the MT tags in hand.

Upcoming recession fears and complete dog chit economy might help odds some. I predict next year will be "better" on that front.

I have backup options if wy doesn't hit on the regular. I dont need to throw any more money to wy to be in the special draw. I'd rather spend another $50 on another point and go the following year. If I didn't have a backup plan, I'd probably feel differently!
