I know there has been a lot of understandably passionate discussion on this topic across HT the past few days. Please keep those opinions to the existing threads. I hope that despite any differences in opinion we may have between us, we are also able to empathize with the personal impacts these layoffs are having on individuals around us. Many of them have dedicated their careers to the public lands and wildlife that we all love.

On Sunday night a good friend of mine, Rosalee Reese, was laid off from her job as a USFS native fish biologist near Monte Vista, Colorado. She worked as the Rio Grande National Forest’s fisheries biologist for the past two years, managing fisheries and wildlife habitat, helping restore watershed health, and working on wildfire resiliency projects. Her probationary status was up in July. The kicker is that she is 7 months pregnant, so not only did she lose her salary and job to come back to, but she also lost her health care and maternity leave.

Rosalee and her husband Kirk are both career public servants, who have dedicated their lives to public lands and wildlife. Kirk was mentioned as "K" in my mountain goat hunt recap that some of you may have read this year. Kirk is currently a CPW hydrologist and is an avid hunter. I have known them both since 2014, when we were all seasonal employees doing endangered fish work in the Colorado River Basin. They have worked extremely hard for the past 15 years to build their resumes to a point where they both had stable jobs, were finally able to buy a house last year, and decided to have their first kid.

You can read more about Rosalee in this article that came out today in the Alamosa Citizen.

Some friends started this GoFundMe with a goal simply to provide Rosalee and Kirk with some semblance of financial stability as they welcome their son into their lives in April. Thank you in advance to anyone who can chip in even a little bit. The amount of money raised so far by their immediate network is a testament to their excellence as human beings.

Huge thank you to @winmag and @Bluffgruff who already donated and can confirm that Kirk is not, in fact, a Nigerian prince.

Thank you,
Tom

I was happy to donate in the hope that it in some way helps to minimize the stress Kirk and Rosalee experience in their final weeks of pregnancy with their first child. Kirk is a beast of a hunter, and definitely not a Nigerian Prince! Haha

Thanks for sharing this.
Stories like this hopefully help others remember that all the statistics and numbers that politicians and people of influence tout are not just statistics, they’re real people just trying to get by.
Wish the best for this growing family.

Thank you very much for your contributions, I appreciate you all.

Yes, insurance is being figured out now and likely covered as a qualifying event through Kirk's job with CPW. I know they are pretty overwhelmed and deeply appreciative of the support. They have a million things to figure out right now, but insurance is top of the list.

trb,

Thanks for sharing this. I like helping people out, but I'm wary of larger charitable organizations that spend donations on overhead and seeking more money.

This is a very direct way to get the money to people I want to support, and I'd encourage others to do the same. Best wishes to Rosalee and Kirk navigating the challenges of life and prayers for a healthy baby!

Neil

I would if I could, but I'm a retired Park Ranger living on small pension & SS.
Make SURE your COBRA will cover more than 6 months (mine) and your not left midyear with no options.

Wish you only the best.

Yeah. This sucks.

I cant imagine the insurance gymnastics of trying to find out if your existing provider (during pregnancy) for all the xyz services is in network, out of network, into scam or whatever BS the health insurance does.

Trump really paying off for you guys hey 👀
If you want to hang around here for much longer, I'd strongly suggest you don't derail important threads like this with politics.

Eff it, now that I think about it, warnings don't seem to help with folks who like to stir the pot. You're gone. I'm in a zero tolerance mode right now and you picked the wrong time to Eff around.

Thanks for taking out the trash. On a page, asking for help no less.

Good people have left the forum because all of the worthless poltics. Zero tolerance is what id vote for to prevent more of the same.

Haven't logged in or posted on HT in quite a while. Daily reader still, but I've been trying to keep off social media, something about being an active participant isn't always the best for me or others.

This hits extremely close to home. We've been fearing the impacts of a plant consolidation on my employment for well over a year and a half. We have fears for the future of her employment as well.

Here's where this really hits home though. We're literally having our first child after a 3 year IVF journey...TODAY via induction (hopefully). We're patiently waiting for things to progress at the hospital as we speak.

So needless to say, we've donated. I know how emotional this journey has been for us, and I just can't imagine.

Anyways, enough said. Glad to see that so many people have supported already.
