Gobble gobble Spring Turkey 2025

Curious how yall keep the fan open for a picture when hunting alone and can't hold it open. I gave up after my 3rd attempt so I could paddle out before dark. Snapchat-827225253.jpg
I did get a bonus critter on the way out

I do wish I tried a little harder for a picture in the field, the fan is prettier than I initially thought.20250426_161133.jpg

Use the selfie timer on your phone
Mine goes up to 10 seconds, enough time to make things right.

Another useful tip is to turn the video mode on and then try different poses positioning the animal whether turkey or deer at different angles. You can then just go through the video and take screenshots when you like what you are seeing. Works really well for making fish and deer look much bigger than they were in person haha

Dang I should've thought about that. Too much adrenaline for my brain to work I suppose. I appreciate the tips.

Met ten mushroom hunters afield, making turkey encounters a tall order. I tried pulling a private land tom off 3 hens this evening, but no dice. Precip and soil temp were just right this year, and mushrooms are everywhere. We all made out like bandits.

Do you dehydrate and freeze the ones you don’t eat? Or just freeze them?

If you don’t dehydrate first, it ruins the texture. I submerge and soak overnight, rinse and slice lengthwise, then dehydrate and freeze. There are many ways to dehydrate - low-temp dehydrator, sun dry, or fan dry. I do not like a heat element (oven, etc.) as I think it produces a different taste. The process works the best on grays. Any damaged mushrooms I cook, or refrigerate and cook within a couple of days. Half-frees are extremely fragile and are consumed instead of stored. Yellow are doable if they are fresh and handled carefully - mine still get damaged a little bit, but I don’t care because I am not selling them. I might try vacuum sealing too to help save on freezer space. When using the stored ones I like to partially reconstitute for a concentrated taste and mildly-leathery texture. Just my personal preference.

My spring season in NC is over. It was kind of a strange one. Had pretty good amount of gobbling in the mornings but couldn’t get any to commit the last 100 yards. Also didn’t see or hear many hens despite see several gobblers and gangs of jakes.

For the first time both gobblers I got were called in during the evening. The first one was at 6:55 pm on 4/13 and the second was at 6:15 on 4/22. Got only poor quick photos of both because I was getting eat up by skeeters on the first and a thunderstorm was about to hit on the second. Giving it a try on some VA public land a few days this week.
