I think I've hunted harder today then I ever have for turkey. Birds were gobbling their heads off Sunday today I heard one bird gobble twice followed immediately by a shotgun blast and no more gobbles. Called in two jakes that came in silent decided to pass probably a mistake. We only get one bird in Oklahoma and I shot a Jake in TX last week. This is the most crowded I've ever seen this piece of public in western Oklahoma snd it's s freaking Wednesday. That along with high winds, the birds not gobbling, and some extreme guilt about leaving the pregnant wife alone with the kids (didn't sleep well last night) have me calling it quits and headed home. Off till Monday so gonna get my life and home in order tomorrow. Then Friday I'm gonna let my daughter play hooky (she's jealous her brother got to last week) and have a daddy daughter day. Turkey hunting in the morning followed by some horseback riding and dinner at the restaurant of her choosing. Oh and I stepped in quicksand wife's gonna have to hose me off.20250416_155456.jpg

Today was pretty wild. I as able to call a hen off private land and this tom took the bait and followed her. Once he saw the decoys, it was on. As the hen was standing about ten feet from me, he was whooping up on my jake decoy. Finally, she worked her way back to him and when they finally separated enough for a shot, the Federal TSS 7’s dumped him. One more tag and then its onto bears.

Was with 100 yards in early hours but lightning chased me back to the car. Back out at 10 and got in some thick pines to coax them off private land onto the public. Best thing was seeing a guy leaving the spot I was heading to as we crossed paths in the corn field. Got to where he just left and 20 min later done deal. I wish I knew how many birds that old mossberg has shot them in the face, I have newer semi autos but just can't leave old shoulder canon home.

We got on a bird gobbling pretty good this morning. I should have got closer before setting up but was concerned about spooking the bird with old thunder foot in tow. I estimate we were about 250 yards away and he sounded real interested but just wouldn't come in. Eventually the gobbles faded as the bird and my daughter lost interest. It was only 9am and there was a lot of hunting left to do. Unfortunately my hunting partner decided we had better things to do so we went on a adventure then to Nana's for horseback riding.20250418_072433.jpg20250418_081501.jpg20250418_095546.jpg

Good news is this is on a piece of public that is close to home with little pressure thay I know well. Only saw two other guys hunting and they were on the opposite side of the lake. That bird should stick around and I think I can get him killed with a little time and luck.
