Gobble gobble Spring Turkey 2025

First hunt will be back home in MN over Easter. Then I’ve got a couple in state trips planned with some good friends. We’ll camp, cook, eat, drink, lie, and shoot turks. One trip is first week of May, the other is a few weeks later. Leaves plenty of time open for chasing local birds and walleyes.

Some pics from last year.

My main goal will be getting my son his first bird and maybe a bonus hog. Have a 4 day trip booked on some private in TX the second week of April. On the way home we will swing by some Oklahoma public and hunt the youth weekend. 7 days with my boy will be great no matter what. Then I gotta take him home work a couple days before heading back out to try and get myself a bird. I'll have 3 1/2 days to kill a bird somewhere in Oklahoma.

I have a question that @Nick87 and I have been talking about.

Decoy setups. Do you run a hen? A hen and Jake? No decoy?

Personally I hunt run n gun so I carry a collapsible hen decoy from Montana decoys. I think it’s called Miss Puurfect or something like that. I set it out 50% of the time depending on my set up. If I’m in the woods I don’t set up a decoy, but if I’m in the open I will set one out.

I was surprised seeing them strutting over the last week on my way to work. I guess when the snow melts they start getting excited! My nephew really wants to go this year, so I am going to try to help him get one. Never have turkey hunted much, but have a few calls and a cheap decoy.

This old gal? Usually this is the only decoy I run and if I have time it gets setup. Although where I'm usually hunting in western Oklahoma it's fairly open not much heavy timber. If I'm on private and don't have to carry them far I have a whole flock of Avian X decoys I love. Setup a 3/4 strut jake behind a nesting hen with a couple feeder/sentry hens around and it's hard to keep the turkey out of the setup. 20250305_192743.jpg

That’s the one!

Nick thinks this set up would be perfect:

Hunting at home, hoping to fill two tags as the last couple years I’ve only filled one. Other goals are help my wife get a bird or two, get at least one bird in a spot I’ve never got one before, try to hunt at least a day with my 3 year old son, and spend at least one day hunting with my bow
