GIANT public land elk (in Montana)

I think it's all about priorities. And when you say "really expensive hunts" I actually don’t spend that much money per year (on average) hunting. Whenever it’s legally possible, I do not hunt with a guide. I like doing self-guided hunts, not just because they are inexpensive but because I think they are the most challenging thing I can do. I have to plan those hunts. I have to do all the scouting. When I do manage to get an animal it’s maybe just a little more rewarding to me because of the friends that I am hunting with, and because I have done all the work. That’s not knocking Outfitters. Some of my best friends are Outfitters and I hunt with guides regularly. Partly because it’s the only legal way you can hunt in places like Montana, as a non-resident.

Technically he is right...you do need an outfitter to hunt the Booth Ranch.
What a clown.

Ya know, the funny thing is, a bunch of eastern and southern bowhunters worship the guy. Start a chuck thread on an archery site and watch what happens. Everybody out west will bash him and guys from the east and south will stick up for the guy. What a phoney.

it's just like Ted Nugent or Michael Waddell threads on archery talk......how many more 'barack' Obama burps do we need to hear from Ted to still consider him good for the sport and a spokesman to be taken seriously......?

I might be one of those guys who defend him. I don't know him or his ethics. I have bow hunted long enough to know how hard it is. It doesn't matter whether it's private or public. We all know it's tougher though on public. The reality is that he has killed animals with his bow that aren't gimmees. Almost anything in Alaska is tough to get. Especially record book animals. A bow hunter especially earns every animal. I would never call him a phony as far as being a successful bowhunter. Like I said I don't know him. He could be a sweet guy or cocky sob. I am open minded enough to know that he is a good and successful bowhunter. I think stardom sometimes makes people jerks and even do things that aren't so ethical but I can't personally judge him on that.

I think his comments in regards to being able to hunt montana legally every year with a guide are being taken out of context. The reality is that the only way a non res could hunt every year is by getting a outfitter sponsored tag or you could be the luckiest sucker on the planet and draw every year as a non res. Like I said I don't worship him or even know him, I just know what it's like to bowhunt some of the animals he does and can respect that.
Ok fire away at me:D

I'd have a lot more respect for the guy if he'd just come out and say "Hey, I'm fortunate to hunt some great private ranches".

Here's a funny story for you....Back in the spring of 1999, I was working north of Billings on a private ranch in the bull mountains. I was talking to the ranch manager about the elk on the place. He said "We had some big shot, famous guy hunting here this past year" I asked who? "Some guy named Chuck something". I said Adams? "Yep, that's him, I guess he's some famous bowhunter" So I asked him about the hunt and he said Chuck walked in and asked "Where's the best spot for me to go?" Ranch manager told him to go climb up in a windmill and sit and wait, the elk come there every day. The ranch manager also told me after he killed his bull, he brought out 3 big duffel bags full of stuff and would change clothes, take pictures, then change clothes, re-position the elk and take more pictures.

I guess who would want to read that story in a magazine? Especially since being good enough to shoot "hunter shy herd bulls on public land" sounds better.

I have the same opinion on Chuck as I do on the Eastman crew...and for the same reasons. Their accomplishments should not be diminished by anyone, as they have all done things that are difficult.

But they lose my respect when they try to inflate what they have done. They go out of their way to hide how they have killed their animals, even though they are within the boundaries of the law. That is why they are phoney.

You shoot two of the biggest elk in the state of MT and I'll give you a high five. When you tell me they were killed on a private ranch, I"ll still tell you it is quite an accomplishment. But when you try and tell me that you killed them on public land when you didn't....well that is what makes me want to punch you in the face. I think most people have problems with Chuck and Eastmans because they piss on our backs and try to tell us that it is raining. If they would be honest, few people would have anything to gripe about.

There are some big tracks of public land that are landlocked within those ranches. I think that he could be telling the truth but the reality is that the land just as well be private if it's inaccessible. Again I can appreciate his skills with a bow. You don't go wait for stone or dall sheep to come in by a windmill. You earn those suckers. I don't know him and haven't read any of his or eastman's books just an observer. I'll leave it at that so I don't get all stinky if this starts getting ugly.:D

I know a lot has been written questioning Chuck Adams. And take his speeches or interview how you want, ego, cocky, knowledged, confident ??.. And i have "heard" a lot of stories, but i have seen none of them published or anything to discredit his record. I myself have a lot of respect for him as a bowhunter and writer. Like lawnboy said, he still put in the time, made the stalks, judged the animal, the situation, the distance, and made the shot, etc... Something that not a very high percentage of people out there can consistantly do. He made a decision to take the super slam very seriously and got it done. I have heard him speak a few times and met him a few times also. I have followed him some, enjoy reading his articles but would have to say he isn't one of my few favorites. But you can tell he is a true pupil of his sports, the animals and his hunts. I have found out no matter what you do, to be truly successful, like he is, at some point it takes a lot of hard work. He was doing a lot of things before other people thought to do it, sacraficing in time and money, researching, and set up a lifestyle that would allow him the best chance at bowhunting success. And he did do a lot for the sport of bowhunting, which i believe the majority of is positive.

A lot of people like to throw darts at people on top. Private or public, can't fault successful people for maybe getting some help on things. Its a product of all the rest of his work, friendships, status, etc. Its easy to judge/question from the bottom. Chuck has shot more animals out west and in Canada, spot-and-stalk than from a treestand. So have never seen any difference in opinions from people out west, compared to the east. And his shows don't seem an less crowded in either place.

Greenhorn, glad you inspired by it. Thats one reason i check out trophy photos of some of the best, just to get me pumped and dream what is out there for me to find. I believe there are public land giants out there for you and me to chase. The voyage to chase one animals with a bow is a great and difficult endeavor. I know a few other devoted individuals that believe this and chase a few records, may the be personal or in a book. Good luck, Fish

Nectar.................that has recently been done:) It's friggin expensive though so you will have to break out the extra piggie banks................

If Nectar would just get lucky and finally connect with some of the giants on his place, we'd be seeing his face instead of Chuck's in the record book. I aint even lying:eek:

Chuck Adams has definatley accomplished a lot of great hunts, but can he give a horse an uppercut and turn it into a giraffe like Chuck Norris...............................yea, i didn't think so:):)LOL

Oh, and there is no such thing as global warming. Chuck Norris was cold, so he turned the sun up. Good luck with that one Mr. Adams:)LMAO

Here's a simple tool that shows how much public land is available within the boundary of Booth Land & Livestock. http://nris.state.mt.us/gis/ownmaps.asp Take careful note of just how much accessable (or even inaccessable) public land is available within it's boundaries. Rocket science is not required to see that even chopper access isn't going to provide much of a hunt. After that simple and enlightening 5 minute excercise, go back up and read the audio segment in the first thread and reconsider how much is taken out of context.

No doubt - with as much as he's hunted in his life, he's got to be a very skilled bowhunter and has certainly had some amazing days in the field. However, when I read over-embellished fictional accounts of a hunt, or "how-to" tips from some of these guys.. I take them at face value.

That audio segment is great!
