Red alert, snow is falling in the south. Our roads are brined and the temps are cold. School was canceled today in preparation for this. I saw one Yankee driving around who obviously missed his homeland as he had a snow plow attached to his f150. The almost 4 year old has been talking all week about wanting to build a snowman, if we get a decent snow then this will be the first one since before he could walk.

Stores are mostly bereft of milk, bread, and eggs at this point. I am otherwise occupied. I will post survival updates as time passes. 20250110_134531.jpg20250110_134348.jpg20250110_134240.jpg

We currently have 5-6” of snow at my house in Huntsville, AL. Got to give my son a little snow driving lesson and he had fun. If it freezes tonight things in my area are really going to be bad. It’s very lightly raining/sleeting on top of the snow so a hard freeze would really throw a monkey wrench into northern AL.

This could be a rare one for us, doesn't look like it will get above freezing today so no sleet or freezing rain.

I talk to people in Raleigh area almost daily and lived there for 25 years. A few years ago, towards the tail end of Covid, I was talk with a colleague there and said “I hear you’re expecting snow there.” He says “yeah, they’ve already cancelled school” (which is quite common to cancel school before the first flake ever falls). I said, “Wait, aren’t you still on virtual school? Why would you have a snow day for virtual school?” He says “yeah, but the kids would get upset if they didn’t get their snow day”. 🤦‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️

ruff!

Well we kept power all night, not much ice so not many falling trees. Our neighborhood has underground lines too so that helps. As long as somebody doesn't run into a pole on the main road we'll be fine. After a breakfast of pancakes and deer sausage we're getting ready to go see if we can build a snowman. I don't think it's going to happen as the last wave was sleet and freezing rain so everything is really crusty. Maybe I'll let him try driving his tractor around on the ice.

Sleet and freezing rain knocked the snow down to about the inch mark. Also made it non-snowballable, but it was pretty good for sledding. I got out and drove around this morning, roads are not bad. Gonna be a nightmare in the morning though when the melt refreezes. Little man had a great time. Now back to work laying the kitchen floor for me. 20250111_090712.jpgVideoCapture_20250111-103019.jpg

About 6 months after having my drivers license, we got an ice storm (in the Midwest). My dad said it's time to learn to drive in winter conditions. My mom had just made the ~1 mile drive home from work and said it was the worst driving conditions she'd seen in decades and told him it would be the dumbest day to do that. We went anyways. It was pure ice. I could have skated on the street. Under my father's supervision, I crashed directly into a tree within 3 miles from home. The car in front of my spun out, I hit the brakes and it was done before it started. That was before ABS. Had just been talking about pumping the brakes but too little experience for it to have clicked for me yet.

Perhaps the only time the teenager crashed the car, but only dad got in trouble. :ROFLMAO:

Knock on wood, but that's the only wreck I've been in.
