Friday Gun Porn Thoughts

New tube and custom dies and fireforming...stop feeding my crazy.

If you can rebore it to .338, you can rebore it .323

200 grain bullet at 2700 fps. Pretty good elk medicine. Good downrange ballistics and since you're already using a modified 98 action, might as well make it a proper caliber.

Or, 8x60

If you're considering a 8mm, might want to think aobut the 8X64 Brenneke. About the same as the -06 version, but fancier.

Too few bullets at 8mm, and in copper they offer no step up in weight over .308. If I go 338 I can get 200/225gr bullets.

Advice from someone who has been running an 8mm hunting rifle since 2006. There are significantly more options for bullets in both .308 and .338 diameters... I still wish Winchester would have done the right thing to start with and released the .325WSM as a .338WSM... The 8mm slugs are typically shorter ogive than comparable .308 or .338 slugs, BC's tend to be lower and down range performance tends to suffer. If you are going to rebore the rifle, I'd go .338-06. I wish I would have recognized this before I picked up my .325WSM. I would have probably gone with a .300WSM if I had actually looked at the performance and not been dead set on wanting a unique and less common cartridge.

Just my $.02...

Baloney.

A 200 grain bullet from an 8mm Mauser is plenty of everything. Neother the 338-06 or the 8mm are extended range cartridges. They're 200-300 yard affairs.

If you want a medium bore long range gun, get a 338 wm. If you want a 300 yard thumper, get a medium bore.

Only one company offers an 8mm copper bullet @ 200gr though, everything else 180, compared to 338 where there are a lot more options (outside Hornady), this is my rate limiting step. Not looking for a long range thumper, but want a few options for bullets @ 200gr or greater.

8mm
Hornady GMX - 180gr
Nosler Etip - 180gr
Barnes TSX/TTSX - 180, 200/160

338
Hornady GMX - 185
Nosler Etip - 200/225
Barnes TSX/TTSX - 185, 210, 225, 250 /160, 180, 210, 225
