Fishing Question

I have gone up every year for 26 years and have done the Kenai and Homer 4 times. That area is good for big kings but it has two short seasons and they will shut the river down with no notice if the escapement is not up to par. The scenery is OK but it is crowded on the river. A guide with lodging for 7 days runs around $3000 to $4000 per person for good quality. I would suggest a trip to Sitka and think you can find lodging and 4 days of fishing there for $2000 or so per person. It is the most scenic part of Alaska and has two hatcheries for kings and silvers plus halibut. Good luck.

I've never heard of those guys, but I don't get down to Kenai too often. I don't know how long of a trip you plan on taking, but if you can, try to make it as long as possible. There is so much to see and do up here, I wouldn't know where to begin. If you want to see some great wildlife, make sure to go visit Denali NP. Take the park service bus instead of one of the fancy tour companies. They stop more often and it is way cheaper. I have done it a couple of times and never been disappointed. I have seen grizzlies (including a momma with two cubs from about 40 yards), moose, caribou, a wolf, eagles, red foxes, and tons of other smaller critters. Oh yeah, and there is also the insane scenery and Mt. McKinley.

I do most of my fishing down in Valdez (its a lot closer to Fairbanks/North Pole). If you decide to get over that way, let me know and I can turn you on to a couple real nice fellers that run charters down there. In Valdez, halibut starts up in May and is good through August. Peak times are usually late June/Early July. Most of the salmon start running mid-summer. The reds and pinks are first and the silvers hit big time the beginning of August. Valdez also has some cool shark fishing opportunities if you are interested. Maybe you can visit Hinchinbrook and find another man-eating killer bear like some other guy on here. ;)

Lastly, try to see as much of the state as you can, its all beautiful. If you get up this way, make sure to PM me or something. I would love to get together with anyone from Hunttalk. I have a great porch that is perfect for grilling a few burgers and tossing back some cold ones. Plus we can swap stories about Cabo. I think I'm going back next October.

Scott knows every inch of the kanai river when it comes to fish. My wife did a trip with him a couple of weeks ago and they were slaying the dollies, silvers and trout.

His cell # is (907)382-6808, give him a hollar and if he isnt what your looking for maybe he can point you in the right direction. Hes a southern boy so hes got the twang but a hell of a guy.

Thanks for the replys. My wife is a school teacher and I'm self employed. So summer should be a great time for a long vacation. Trouble is we are taking care of parents so two weeks would probably be the limit. I'll definitly look you up quippe9 if I come.
