First DIY backcountry hunt in CO: lessons learned

I never hunt meadows or even be near them. I've never glassed either. Don't walk trails. Do all those things and you won't be alone. It's easy hunting and very popular because it is.

Get in the deep timber. Think like an elk. If you were an elk would you be in a meadow that's lined with hunters?

Hunt where you don't want to and you'll find elk. Blow down? Perfect. Elk love it.

Don't do what they do on hunting shows.

Outfitters charge Big bucks, if you see outfitters, your in good Elk country. Our group of 4 camped at 8500' with 2 outfits within a mile of us and we still took 4 Elk.
We horse backed in but they were our own horses. You can rent from an outfit but expect to put up $1000.00 cash deposit if they get away from you.
Saw that happen once, guys lost there deposit 😁😁😁 horses showed up back at their barn few days later. Animals not stupid they go for the Feed, outfitters go for the $$$ some are great some are ???? Well that's a whole other story.
But even if you come away empty handed once in a while, it's worth the time and effort to add the memories 😁
