Really stoked to get this cow in Nevada unit 114 at 11K feet just below Mt Moriah on the edge of the Table. Packed her out in 3 loads about 5-6 miles per round trip. Certainly an amazing first archery hunt.
I put a herd of 15 elk to bed in the morning, hiked about 4 miles from the wilderness trailhead to a plateau above them, and then stalked the herd of 15 in my socks about one. I drew three times and had to hold off shooting because a cow went through the hole too fast, the next had a raghorn step in the way and the third a calf got in the way. They started moving again, and I ended up stalking parallel to them for about 40 yards with some only 30 yards away before getting a shot at 45 on a nice cow. It's amazing what wind will do for you hunting elk.
I marked the spot where I shot her and went and got my boots and pack and found an old aluminum arrow on the way back. She went about twenty yards st then laid down. I gave her 10 or 15 minutes and went in for a kill shot, but had rushed things to put her out of her misery. She ran 10 yards then died up against a dead log that made breaking her down way more work.
Such an great experience, with trucks and atvs zipping all over the rest of the mountain, and not another hunter that I saw in the Wilderness. It makes me very thankful for the opportunities we have on our public lands.
Also less stoked on the blowout I got later that night while heading home. Ended up having to dig a hole to get the spare tire on.
