These red deer have been giving me the run around lately, for those of you who don't know there is no public land hunting anywhere in the UK, i hunt on quite a few farm's where the landowner has let me control the deer, we call these farm's 'permissions', in my case they range from just 15 acres to 500 acres, the latter is a big farm in my part of the world.
That has been the problem, i have seen evidence of the red deer crossing my permissions during the night and seen them on the neighbouring farms, up to a herd of 32 last week, it is really frustrating as the other farm has another deer hunter on it but he rarely goes there.
But today i outwitted them, we can shoot one hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise, sunrise was 7.04am this morning, i entered the farm at 6.04am working my way around the hedgerows i noticed the top of an antler, then another, in all there were 7 stags (they form bachelor groups after the rut) but about to jump into the woods and onto the other farm, but all i could see was antlers!
So i back tracked very quickly and waited, and for some reason this stag suspected something was wrong, instead of running off he came to investigate, it was a slightly rushed shot at only 150 yards with my 30-06 which shattered its spine above the shoulders, i quickly stuck another right in the engine room and game over.
I do think they look like your Elk, this is one of the best i have ever shot, 12 points in total, which is a 'royal'
Cheers
