Caribou Gear

Festivals and/or Major sporting event

A family trip to KC for a Royals game ended up being quite memorable as we were there to witness Morganna the Kissing Bandit hop the 3rd base fence and trot (BOUNCE???) towards home plate to plant a kiss on George Brett's cheek. She was in town dancing at a "gentlemen's club" and had declared her intent on kissing George, so the ushers were on the lookout. Somehow she made it onto the field anyway, with the miracle that she didn't faceplant headfirst into the grass of the infield, being so "top-heavy".

San Antonio final four semi-finals with my son, with my third most favorite team from the state of Kansas in the mix. (Wildcats>Shockers>Jayhawks) He paid for the seats, and bought a couple of souvenir t-shirts which was nice, but the priceless moment came when he said that he loved being the one paying for it, as he felt grown up and very thankful for his parents, and his upbringing.

Joe and his wife Pam moved to nearby Crawford around the turn of the century. They built the wonderful Mad Dog ranch. Philanthropic Pam created the Cocker Kids' Foundation and breathed some new life into the town and surrounding area. They held an annual fundraiser, a yardsale @ the Cocker Castle. Several friends have 2nd hand clothes from Joe's closet. His concert in Hotchkiss @ the county fairgrounds was in preparation for his last world tour.
They were certainly a big help to the schools and local community. We lived right up the road from the Cockers and it was always a pleasure chatting with Joe on his morning walk or fishing. We went to some excellent parties at the Mad Dog Ranch over the years.

Dick Green was the second baseman that year and after he retired he was a neighbor growing up. He had some sweet memorabilia in his house. I wish I was older at the time to appreciate it.
Joe Rudi's son is my CPA. Great to hear him reminisce about those days.

I never liked crowds so I don't attend many big events. I did go to October fest once but then discovered that every town in Germany has it's own celebration where you can drink beer served by busty bar maids while sitting at a long table swaying back and forth and singing with a bunch of strangers to Ump Pa Pa music. The only concert I ever went to was Weird Al Yankovic, just because my wife got to meet him and insisted we go.

Just a couple on here that would have any interest, but I just saw that Jeff King won't be in this year's Iditarod due to emergency surgery. Bummer. Heck of a nice guy.

Kentucky Derby (American Pharoah's first leg)
Kentucky Derby Infield (this is a completely different event as you don't so much see the horses, but should be experienced at least once)
Toronto SARSfest
Bonnaroo (after it had gone "mainstream")
Halloween in New Orleans (the kick-off to their never-ending season of debauchery)
St. Patrick's Day in Savannah
Not a major, but watched a footy (Australian rules football) match in Sydney - I don't understand why this sport hasn't gone global.

Bucket list:
the other Derby
A steeplechase race
Brazilian Carnival
An Olympics
America's Cup (although less appealing with the wing-sailed boats)

Interesting read

I was surprised, that only April has attended a heavyweight championship match.

When in Texas we also attended the Jai alai matches in Old Mexico but, also dog races in Texas, neither held my interest

Bluegrass billy. I would like to attend the Kentucky Derby

My eldest brother had an uncashed $10 win ticket on Secreteriat in the Derby. He raised and raced quarterhorses. Passed at 85 and never knew who ended up with that ticket. Man knew horse and breeding.

The crowds were so bad that he did not bother with cashing the ticket.

Do you know the rules or what the time limit is on cashing in the ticket Bobbydean ?

I love quarter horse racing but enjoy watching them work cattle even more.

We went to an art show in New Mexico but I am forgetting where. The entire town was involved and I remember my dad telling me that some retired hollywood actors lived there. I remember Shirley McClain and Gene Hackman. We had a good time

I think it would've only paid $25 anyway, as Secretariat was the favorite. Memorabilia value is higher.

Trivia time: Sham, placing behind Secretariat's win, ran the second-fastest Derby ever. Only one other horse has broken 2:00 (Monarchos' win in 2001), but even he didn't beat Sham.

Hey there! I stumbled upon this old thread and thought I'd chime in. Festivals and major sporting events are always a blast, right? It's cool how everyone has their own favorites and preferences. Personally, I haven't been to many myself, but I've always been curious about Carnival in Brazil. It seems like an explosion of energy and colors. By the way, I'm new to this forum and haven't attended any of these events yet. But hey, if you're looking for event production specialists to make your festival or major sporting event unforgettable, I've heard good things about this service https://lalightingandsound.com/downtown-la-event-production-services/. They offer all sorts of event production services in Downtown LA. So, what about you guys?
