Federal wildlife officials on Friday rejected requests from conservation groups to restore protections for gray wolves across the northern U.S Rocky Mountains, saying the predators are in no danger of extinction as some states seek to reduce their numbers through hunting.

The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service also said it would work on a first-ever national recovery plan for wolves, after previously pursuing a piecemeal recovery in different regions of the country. The agency expects to complete work on the plan by December 2025.

Interesting Stats on the wolf population on Isle Royale.

“The scientists’ 2022-23 survey put the number of wolves on the island at 31, up from 28 wolves the prior year, and the number of moose at 967, down 28% from 1,346.

The team attributed the decline to lower survival rates for calves, starvation and wolf predation. The scientists calculated a rate of an estimated 0.52 moose killed for each wolf every month last year.”

Wonder how many deer that translates to?

Whelp, those figures translate to each wolf killing 36 - 50 deer per year…. each, depending on wolf maturity. Kinda helps explain the serious decline in deer and moose in N MN. Need quotas and proper controls!
