Today was last day of Oregon Archery Elk , pulled a trail cam today , here’s a dandy crowned out Rosie that appears to have given everyone the slip , pic is a week old , John and I hung that cam at a river crossing on the 1st week of archery season

Today I tagged out on the 2nd day of Oregon’s 4 day 1st Season Coast Range Roosevelt Hunt , did 2 days of scouting was in elk every day including opening day , found some elk feeding on a bench way up the mountain, got there before they feed out of cut , was very exhausted from double timing up the mountain was able to get a bull down , few extra shots in there because I was winded , but happy I pulled it off , amazed is more like it , but sometimes things just break right and today was that day for me , here’s some pics of the adventure

My 1st day scouting had 9 elk walk right over the top of me going single file at maybe 40 yds ,5 cows and 4 spikes , here is a pic I took of the lead cow going past as I was laying flat on my back



After the elk passed me one of the spikes went on the ridge across from me and I took this pic through my binos



Here’s my bull and my friends with a chainsaw wench that came to help when the call went out BULL DOWN , took him up the mountain whole

Very cool.Is this an otc tag??I'd like to try one day but always thought it was super crowded hunting.Is it easier to use that wench then just 1/4 and pack out.

I was in a draw unit , 3 point bull or better, I think it’s a 95% draw with no points , and yes it’s a lot easier than using your back you just walk with the bull and lift the head by the antlers as obstacles come in you path , sometimes 2 guys lift , some years back we winched 2 spike bulls up the hillside at once, up a serious vert , we always wench as a 1st choice

they only give 1350 tags for the unit , its hit or miss, last season where i started i saw 6 guys in the first hour so I left and went else where , this year i went same place only a husband and wife came past on mountain bikes early am and that was the only hunters i encountered all day.
