elk unit 13 wyoming

Hunted it the year of the Mullen fire 21, I think. The burn area had a bunch of deer. Bunches of cows that would book it across the burned area back over to the green areas. It was pretty Mosaic like any other burn. Ended up getting my elk about a mile from the burn in 13 that year.

Good luck. I bet it’s got more underbrush like the Mullen fire does but not much for growth yet. Just speculation though.

anyone hunt this unit 2022, was wondering what burned area looked like
Encampment River provides hunters with an excellent place to chase general season elk. There are great elk numbers here, the habitat is ideal, and trophy potential is here due to the thickly timbered areas within the unit. The biggest issue with this unit is that some of the high country is wilderness. A non-resident can not hunt wilderness areas in Wyoming without a guide or resident companion.
Timbered slopes with a lot of upland areas are dominated by sagebrush, grass and mountain shrubs. Timber stands consist of limber pine, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, subalpine fir and scattered pockets of aspen. The burnt areas were very crispy in 2022 but unfortunately another fire is needed to incinerate the downed timber. Elite hunters were still seeing a lot of deer and elk in the burnt areas as the animals fed on the fresh growth after the fires.

Reviving this thread vs making one of my own. Drew a Southern region tag for 2024 and considering 13. The stock GoHunt blurb someone posted mentions the Wilderness. It appears that it is relatively small, and a lot of it is 9k+ in elevation. My understanding is that the elk will not be >9k ft, but I am a rank amateur in elk hunting.

There’s two bulls at 12500’.

I’m saying they’re where you find them. Elevation is important but it isn’t a hill to die on.

Totally understand that the elk don't have an altimeter, just looking for general guidance on whether they tend to be high enough to be un-hunt-able for us NR, due to the wilderness

Relatively little wilderness in 13 and not so sure it is the highest elevation in that area either.
Forget the wilderness and just go hunt, elk are in the area to be found.

Wait til you see how steep parts of it are !!

I am not looking into guides at all. It is sounding like there's plenty of elk in the region (13, 15, 21). Already wearing out the hills and stairs in my area to prepare 😓

Looking at this Unit too. Hoping 13 will be a good NR hunt for those of us flatlanders that shoot a bow and are willing to take on some elevation.
