Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

Elk Caliber and Bullet Choice - 2024

For my son: 7mm-08 with 140 gr Gamekings
For me: 7mm mag most likely with 140 gr Gamekings, but may pick up some 140 gr ttsx to give a shot on.

Ok, it’s looking like either a 120 gr partition out of a 257 Weatherby or a 300 gr partition out of a 375 H&H.

I picked up some Speer 172 grain Impact bullets over the winter to try in my Tikka 30-06. Looks like they have good short and long range performance. Can’t wait to get it out and see what they do with some IMR 4350.

Made the decision to have my 338/06 AI reamed out to the Weatherby 338 RPM with a 4D Weatherby Freebore Reamer. I just wasn't satisfied with my overall results with either the A-Square std or the Ackley (much as I love them!) More power! and I still have my sweet handling little rifle. Oh yeah!
RevJim,
Just curious if you have extra loading tools for the 338/06 AI? I am in the market for some reloading dies.

I'm sorry Uncle Cap, I sold the dies. I do have some new, 1x fireformed 30-06 cases (formed into 338/06, just have to shoot them!), some in new Whelan cases and a wad of new Hornady 35 Whelan brass if interested. I have Lapua and Winchester brass in the '06. I actually just necked down the Whelan brass the few times I shot it as an Ackley. May I also suggest you have your rifle throated long, or like the Weatherby freebore? They will hum if they have a running start! :)

I am currently working up a load for my .300 Win Mag with 175 grain LRX with H4831sc behind it for my Weatherby. I'm also trying to get 168 grain ABLRs to work in my wife's Tikka in .308 Win with Varget. The ABLRs are proving to be a royal pain.

If a bullet doesn’t shoot with 44 grains of Varget underneath it in a .308, it isn’t the right bullet.

Classic European moose cartridge vs one that screams American excess
It's no secret I'm dreaming for @p_ham to resurrect my 7mm M70 into a 358 Norma Mag. I've ordered 196gr HHT, 215gr HHT, 255gr HHT, 275gr HH.
It's looking like the 275 takes up too much powder capacity. But even at 2700 it produces 4200 ft/lb energy in QL modeling.

Swedish excess.

Got the moose tag, but any 6 point bull elk will get the Hammer. By-catch.

Working up a load for a 308 with 165-gr trophy bonded tips. Have taken several elk/deer with this bullet but all were factory TBT loads. First time with my own recipe.

Picked up two boxes of these, anyone had any experience using them on Elk? I don't have enough time to complete reloading the speer gland slams this summer.
